Re: Got The Camera Now a lens

The Tamron 18-270 is a pretty good all round lens that gets good press. Alternatively, there are Sigma and Canon lenses that are in the 18-200/250 range. I used to have a Sigma 18-200 (the non stabilised version) and found it to be pretty good if you accepted its limitations.

If you want a two lens solution, a 70-300 in addition to the kit lens will be a cheaper option to the Tamron 18-270. The Sigma APO range are good lenses at a reasonable price. Non APO lenses are cheaper, but the lenses are made from different glass. Again, I'm sure that Tamron and Canon also make lenses in this range.

Re: Got The Camera Now a lens

I think Dabhand summed it up nicely unless you want to spend some serious money. My all-purpose walkabout covers 24-105, has IS and constant f4. But at 789 (lowest price new) it's 2 to 3 times more that the 18-200 etc.

Having just looked at your kit list I see you already have a Sigma 18-200 with OS

Re: Got The Camera Now a lens

The 24-105 is a great lens that many members use. However, on your camera it will equate to a 38 - 168, so could not really be considered an all-rounder as it is a bit long at the short end having no wide angle capability at all from the normal human eye view.

It could, of course compliment the kit lens, but it would lack the reach of a (for instance) 70-300 that might be a better two lens solution.

If you have a Sigma 18-200 OS why are you looking for a general purpose lens? You have one already

It's the lens which is on my camera the most. Yes it's worth the money to me but only you can say whether you want to spend that much. I use it on a 7D (crop) and have no complaints for a walkabout....if I want wider then I just use my legs .......or a 10-22 slips in the pocket quite well.

Re: Got The Camera Now a lens

After talking to the guy in Jessops and listing to you guys, the Canon EF 28-135mm, its better suited to the camera and a lot cheeper . the EF 24-105L is one fantastic piece of kit but as dabhand said the range will be changed by Camera and not give me what i set out to get in the first place .

Re: Got The Camera Now a lens

Firstly apologies for being a muppet

turned out the guy knew less than I do about lens so I took it back after much reading of the 3 million forums review sites here and everywhere else . I'm considering sticking with the kit lens and giving up . the simple fact is I have no idea what I'm doing here . I want a good quality lens that is pin sharp that can be cropped I can put onto the body and forget .

I have looked at the :

Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS

any thoughts I leave for Cubs in two weeks and would like to sort it by then .

Re: Got The Camera Now a lens

Have you tried your 18-200 with the camera? I still think that this type of lens is hard to beat for all round use.

Your camera and a half decent lens should be able to give you sharp images. Maybe you should try the kit lens and the 18-200 for a while to see how you get on and if you still want to get another lens later on you will have some experience to use to make an informed choice.

Re: Got The Camera Now a lens

That is a very similar range that my 18-70 kit lens on my old D70s had. I found it to be very good for me and did not add any more lenses for about a year.
