Got them!

Last week I ordered two new lenses as my old ones were 5 years old and one has no VC, and the other is an f4, both Canon L lenses. (I have had 2 Canon 24 / 70 L loose the auto focus so not inclined to get another).
They came this morning, a Tamron 24 /70 2.8 Di VC USD SP and a Tamron
70 / 200 2.8 Di VC USD SP. They both have a 4 stop stabilisation and have 2.8 max aperture . The finish is great and they are properly weighty. All the reviews I have read put them as equal or better than Canons own offerings and at roughly half the price of the L lenses. I will try them tomorrow and also take some resolution / colour chart shots to see how good they are.
I will do a review on them shortly and let you know how they do from my perspective. Another good point is they come with a 5 year warranty
The only down was having to get 82mm filters for the 24 / 70... a C.Pol and an ND Grad, still must go and play with them now.
Charles.

Re: Got them!

SOUNDS LIKE YOU WILL BE VERY BUSY THIS WEEK-END CHARLES. I WILL BE VERY INTERESTED TO HEAR HOW THE TAMRON 70-200 2.8 PERFORMS, AS I WAS CONTEMPLATING BUYING THAT LENS.

I COULD NOT JUSTIFY THE PRICE OF THE CANON 70-200 2.8, SO IT WAS BETWEEN THE TAMRON AND THE SIGMA, WELL I WENT FOR THE SIGMA,Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 EX DG OS HSM, IT HAD GREAT REVIEWS, THEN AGAIN SO DID THE TAMRON, BUT THE SIGMA WAS 799 WHEREAS THE TAMRON WAS I THINK 1050, SO IT WAS THE PRICE OF THE SIGMA THAT MADE MY MIND UP.

I HAVE FOUND IT MUCH TO HEAVY TO HAND HOLD, WITH ONE HAND, SO IT WILL BE TRIPOD AND MONOPOD, I DID GET A CULLMET CHEST POD, BUT WAS NOT HAPPY WITH PUTTING THE WEIGHT OF MY CAMERA AND LENS ON IT, PLUS TO FIDDLY TO USE.

HAVE A GREAT WEEK-END SHOOTING WITH THE NEW LENSES

PS SIGMA 70-200 USES A 77MM FILTER

Re: Got them!

Hi Woody, I have given them both a good workout over the weekend. Both are very sharp corner to corner and the 4 stop VC works well and fast, (push the shutter release to focus and the VC is working almost as fast). Comparing them to my Canon 24 / 70 2.8L (Mk 1) and Canon 70 / 200 f4 is I would say after this weekend they are MUCH better! The pair also costs just under the Canon 70 / 200 2.8 so is well worth it. It was a very contrasty day with bright sun and nearly black shadows and they coped well, I could not see any chromatic abs or distortions . Most of the images were taken at our Sea Cadet unit recording some building alterations , but will be taking some for here soon (weather permitting).
I find on a "bad day" that I need a monopod as well, (shoulder arthritus) as the 70 / 200 +IDs Mk 111 is quite a weight . Hope you are as pleased with your new Sigma and look forward to seeing some results.
All the best, Charles.

Re: Got them!

Just put an image in "wildlife" of a butterfly used as a test shot to see colour and sharpness.
Taken on the 24 / 70 not bad for a non macro lens (IMHO).

Re: Got them!

CHARLES, YOU MENTIONED YOUR LOCAL SEA CADETS HUT.

WELL HEAR IS A BIT OF HISTORY. I WENT INTO THE SEA CADETS IN 1963, WHEN I WAS THIRTEEN AND THREE MONTHS OLD, WHICH WAS THE RULING THEN.

ON FRIDAY 22ND NOVEMBER 1963, AT AROUND 8 O'CLOCK IN THE EVENING, I WENT TO THE QUARTERMASTERS STORE, TO GET MY UNIFORM, AS I WALKED TO THE COUNTER, IT WAS ANNOUNCED ON THE RADIO, WHICH WAS IN THE STORES, THAT PRESIDENT JOHN KENNEDY, HAD BEEN ASSASSINATED. THAT WAS FIFTY YEARS AGO THIS WEEK

P S I WAS IN THE ROMFORD SEA CADET CORP

Re: Got them!

"Ready Aye Ready" Woody. Yes, I remember where I was on that day, a boy soldier in Malaya on patrol. We were called back to camp and had a lockdown for three days. (Now I feel old!)
The lens seems to be a good one, the 70 / 200 is just as sharp, so I am well pleased.
Charles.
