Help - Digital Camera popped and died?

My digital camera (Pentax *ist DS) just made a popping sound and now won't turn on. batteries are charged and work in other devices.

New batteries and it still won't turn on.

I've googled and come up with nothing - anybody here with any experience like this?

I need it for a family function for tomorrow too and if it's dead I'll be devastated!

Heidi

Oh dear, Heidi. This does not sound very good. Just a wild guess. Popping sound + no power could be a fuse letting go. If this is right, it will be a service/repair job. Try googling 'Pentax *ist DS fuse' and phone your local supplier/service centre.

Not sounding too good, Heidi!

Whilst can't think of anything defintive, be worth trying a different lens and then different memory card (in case either's pulling down the power)

Re: Help - Digital Camera popped and died?

Thanks. I've tried different memory cards but not lenses. I had been using a flash unit this week but today the flash unit hadn't been anywhere near my camera. But I wonder if that could have potentially caused a problem?

I'll try the google suggestion. I rang a repair agent in the Sth Island and may have to send it off after the weekend.

I've got some film for the function tomorrow. I was actually debating whether or not to switch back to film this week - decision made I guess!

Not a 3rd party, older flash is it? They can have high trigger voltages (OK with film but digital ain't happy with them!)?

Yes it was. It's an old Starblitz.

Oh no. Stupid flash unit.

Re: Help - Digital Camera popped and died?

If you have used a flash with a high trigger voltage, it could well be a fuse. They are designed to protect the circuits against current surges and are cheaper to replace than printed circuits, although the labour charges might be similar depending on where they are located.

Re: Help - Digital Camera popped and died?

Hi Hiedi,

I had something similar but with a different brand, I was referred by a friend of mine to a great tech support site with free live help. The guy found the solution for me in a few minutes. I am sure the can do the same for you.

Here is the page for Pentax *ist DS Support

I hope it will help,

Good luck

Marcy
