Help me to decide!

Hi there,
I am getting rid of 3 of my lenses to buy one.....now, which one?

Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM
or
Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM

I like the idea of posessing a L lens but I would like to hear your opinion..

thanks

Re: Help me to decide!

Depends on whether you want something for wide-angle landscape and architectural photography. The 24-105 is a great lens but is aimed primarily at full-frame cameras like the 5D and 1D series. On a 1.6x crop camera 24mm gives an equivalent field of field of 38mm, which isn't terribly wide angle. It would be OK if you also had an ultra-wide such as the Canon 10-22 or Sigma 10-20, but on its own you may find it limiting.

I'd also consider the Canon 17-40 f/4L which is an excellent lens for not too much money.

Re: Help me to decide!

Thanks you,
Let me explain, I have a Sigma 10-20mm, a Canon 55-250mm IS.....
So, I want one in between.......Perhaps I am looking for a lens that
I can have all the time on the camera........

Re: Help me to decide!

If I was you I'd keep those two and get a 17-40 to cover the in-between but is money an issue? Do you have to sell to buy?

Re: Help me to decide!

Hi Stepheno.....
Thanks.... maybe I didn't explain properly...
I am selling other lenses like a Canon 70-300mm, sigma 17-70, etc
I am keeping the 10-20, 55-250, etc
I am looking for one in between.....maybe the 17-40mm is a good choice....

Re: Help me to decide!

I have the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM which is a super lens for a walkabout lens and studio work. I am very pleased with this lens. It complements my Canon 10-22mm and my 70-200mm f2.8L. I am sure the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM is also excellent and the f2.8 will be attractive. However, I find my 70-200mm rather heavy (1.5Kg) so almost always use the 24-105mm where the two lenses overlap. I also sometimes leave the 70-200mm at home when I am confident I am unlikely to need more than 105mm. Weight is probably not an issue for you as your 55-250mm is fairly light. I also suspect that my next camera may be full frame so I was not prepared to invest in another EF-S lens; you might also consider this possibility.

My two L series lenses replaced older Canon lenses and the performance difference is very noticeable.

I also have the 24-105 and can vouch for that as well....on both 40D and 5D.
