Question Hi. Newby photographer going on Safari for honeymoon.

Hello All, what a great site with loads of valuable information from experienced photographers.

I like to think I have a good eye for photo but I have only ever used a digital compact camera. However, I'm getting married in December and for my honeymoon we're are off to Tanzania for a safari. Expensive - but you only get married once {although Dad is currently on marriage #3. lol}.

Anyway, I've just bought the Canon EOS 450D with the twin lens pack. I've done a bit of reading and I get the impression the 55-250mm lens might not be powerful enough for safari. Any comments on this?

I notice that the 75-400mm lens (which is recommended) is very very expensive, far beyond my means.

Is there any other way to increase the zoom power of an existing lens?

Or is it possible to hire lenses from somewhere - I live in London if that helps.

I look forward to your replies, hopefully with loads of great advice, and also look forward to using the site more often as I become more confident at clicking away.

Bye for now

Re: Hi. Newby photographer going on Safari for honeymoon.

Welcome to Pixalo Mark

I think you have made the correct assumption. For a safari I think you will need a longer lens, but the downside is that they are likely to be expensive, especially if you consider that image stabilisation will be very useful too - and that means more expence.

There are small lenses that will fit in between the camera body and the lens that will give a magnification of 1.4, 2 and 3 times. They will cost around 110 - 300 depending on make. Also the higher the magnification, the more the image quality will drop, and with most lenses the 2x and 3x will mean that autofocus will not work. The 1.4x will loose a stop of exposure too, the 2x 2 stops etc. sothere is more to it than meets the eye. Generally, it is better to get the longer lens although many people do use these converter lenses with success.

The Canon 70-300, and the Sigma 70-300 are rated well, but I have to say that 300mm might not be enough for what you want. maybe trying the lenses in a shop might give you a better idea of what they can do.

You could hire (or borrow) a lens too. These threads might be of interest:

Hi,
How long are you going for? Lens hire for long periods can be expensive. They have come down but are still typically 10% for the first week. If you are going for a while it's often cheaper to buy the lens you need off Ebay used, then sell it when you get back even with the fees etc

The Sigma 50-500 or 150-500 are both available to hire. The 50-500 has always had a good reputation and the 150 -500 has OS which might be useful.

Hi VinnyP,
Great advice. I looked on eBay before and noticed that the lenses on there were still fairly expensive, but I never considered selling it on again afterwards - I think thats a brilliant idea.

Are the sigma lenses you talk about suitable for the Canon EOS 450D?
Are they as good as the Canon own brand lenses?
What sort of price should I be paying for a second hand lens on eBay of the type you have mentioned?

Thanks for your help

Mark

The lenses are suitable for the 450D if you get the ones with the Canon Mount. This will be made very clear in any listing I am sure.

Sigma lenses are very well made, the 2 I mentioned do not have equivalents in the Canon range but the Canon 100-400is is the closest and whilst I haven't used it personally I am fairly confident the Canon would be better and a great Safari lens.

The Sigma lenses will be cheaper though. You may struggle to find the 150-500 second hand as it's quite new out but the 50-500 should pop up from time to time. Expect to pay about 500 for a good copy and a bit less for the 150-500 if you can find one. If you are considering the buy then re-sell route then I'd strongly recommend the Canon 100-400IS. These are in demand and it will hold it's value very well. As I said it's going to be an ideal safari lens. You should be able to get one of these for around 700.

Re: Hi. Newby photographer going on Safari for honeymoon.

In a reply on another thread it occurred to me that for short term use one could avoid hire fees completely using the distance selling regs to effectively get up to 7 days hire for free. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable doing this but nothing wrong in law.
