Holiday Blues - Lens repair advice.

At present we are in Tobago on holiday and are getting very wet. This is supposed to be the dry season and if it is I would hate to see the wet one .

The real problem is that I have dropped my camera and the 17 - 85 lens . The camera seems to work OK and so does the lens but until I get the pictures onto my PC I cannot be 100% sure. The damage seems to be all at the front of the lens where one side the filter was jammed back into the lens threads and is very bent. It will take a repair shop to fix it.

I will try to get to repaired on the holiday insurance but am wondering where. I wil probably send it to Canon UK but would anyone recomend an independant repair shop in place of Canon. Also any idea of what turn round time I can expect from Canon. Can someone please help

HI AQ, we have just returned from the BVI - and the locals tell us it rains all year - just not so much in the winter(sic). here is an interesting shot of the rain.

As far as the lens repair goes, my Nikon lens was repaired by Camtronics, Tel 01462 485947, under warranty from Jessups. It looked a mess when broken but now works perfectly.

Re: Holiday Blues - Lens repair advice.

I'd recommend A.J Johnston up in Scotland. They fixed my 300d when it calved a few years back. very decent to deal with and fair prices. I'm sure they do lenses as well as cameras.

If you need contact details, give me a shout!

Sorry to hear about the damage AQ...

I sent my 40D off on Monday to the repairers, and it was back the following Tuesday. They are quoting a 1 - 2 week turnaround at the moment. I use Colchester Camera Repair Service - Link to site

Hope you can get it sorted quickly

Re: Holiday Blues - Lens repair advice.

Thanks for the help. I will look into these options as soon as I get home.

In the next couple of weeks you may get bored with pictures of the birds from T&T. They are stunning. I just hope that they look as good on screen as they do in camera.

Re: Holiday Blues - Lens repair advice.

I( have just sent my lens to Camtronics. I remembered that when I bought the camera at Jessops I was offered a big reduction on a three year insurance deal including accidental damage with D&G insurance. The process was very straight forward just two phone calls to sort it out one to D&G (they use Camtronics) and one to Camtronics. The possibly bad news is that Canon are apparently very slow sending out replacement parts so it may take 4 - 6 weeks to get the lens back rather than the normal < 2 week service Camtronics say they provide.

I normally never take out "breakdown" insurance but as this one included damage I am glad I did. The final cost was about 45 for three years full cover on camera and lens.

Nor me - but when I bought my Sigma 70-200 f2.8, they were so desperate to sell me the insurance, they reduced the price of the lens so I would not be paying any more.

Needless to say, I was pleased that I had the insurance when the AF motor failed, but although Camtronics seem to be a well-organised place, they had to send the lens to someone else to effect the repairs, so it also took a couple of weeks longer than their standard turn around time.

Maybe they can only do basic stuff, or don't/can't handle or get some spares? I actually delivered the lens to them as they are only 20 miles from me, and I got the impression that they repair anything from VCRs to microwaves, and might only be able to do electrical repairs in house.
