How big!

Just been looking on the MPB site.
They have a Canon EF 1200mm f 5.6 L USM. Price? just £99000.00!!
What a bargain, just check my pockets to see if I can get it.
Seriously though, although it would be great for wild life, who could afford it at that price. Or should it be £9900 ?

Re: How big!

This was going around a couple of weeks ago and at that time it was reported that MPB had paid £99,000 for it. It is apparently one of only 20 made. I see that it is, in fact, selling for £99,000 so the first reports were wrong in this respect.

I wonder how it will perform with an extender?

Re: How big!

When it was first produced back in July 1993 it had a price tag of ¥9,800,000 (approximately £57,153 at today’s exchange rate)

Re: How big!

Graham, hmm, with an extender you could probably see the Lunar Rover.

John, when I was produced back in...... I was cost free, I've just checked on the web, I still am.
so why the increase in a part worn lens? There cant be that big a market for it, can there?
Still like that Ferrari last week, someone will pay it, just seems an enormous punt on MPBs part.

Re: How big!

Collectors only interest probably, much like the 6mm f/2.8 Fisheye-Nikkor that went for a reputed £100k from Grays of Westminster. I can't imagine wanting to carry it any distance at 16.5Kg for the lens alone, mind you if you can afford the lens then you can afford the porter .

Re: How big!

I think Nat Geo were rumoured at one time to own two of them.

Couple of interesting articles on it from B&H

The Mother of all Telephotos | B&H Photo Video

Up Close with the Canon EF 1200mm f/5.6 L USM Lens | B&H Photo Video Pro Audio

In the meantime I'll keep dreaming about it and the lottery win. Which will also enable the porter hire...

I think I will just wait and save up for the f2.8 version but who will carry it for me?
