Hypothetically speaking

ok say i have a chance of getting my hands on a canon 400d..........

bearing in mind the kind of photography i do ( ok i know i like to do everything BUT i have to start somewhere).... what lens would be the one to go for ( speaking very much on budget) would i be better going for a bundle with a standard kit lens. .. and if not what should i be looking for?

TIA

Re: Hypothetically speaking

I've not seen anything from you that is screaming out for a long lens, so I'd put the telphoto on the Christmas list and go for around 18-70. This is the range of my kit lens, and it did me well until i splashed out on my other lenes. Of these two I use the 10-20 more than the 70-200, that is why for your use I reckon that going shorter will be a better bet, rather than 24/28-100.

Re: Hypothetically speaking

FI, looking at the results you get from your current camera, you'll be producing cracking shots with a kit lens on a 400D. Bet you can't wait

Re: Hypothetically speaking

In your place I bought the Tamron 18-200 as my first lens. It gave me a good range to try different types of shot and didn't break the bank at £260. I only just sold it, before Christmas, to get the 24-104 IS L. A good walkabout lens for starting out.

Re: Hypothetically speaking

What about the Canon 350D with kit lens Fi ? Knowing you don't want to buy online, I can see PCworld are doing it for £379 online ...so I'm sure they would match instore ?

If your not so worried about pixels ,then the Nikon D50 with kit lens for £330 from same place

Re: Hypothetically speaking

definately something to think about Dave........... the one thing that im not sure about is the size.... now be NICE boys. but whats putting me off is that they seem very small..and i KNOW that size isnt everything! heheh

but the cam i use now is a lovely size and i do like the feel and weight...... im kinda not very happy about thinking of having something smaller and lighter in my hands......

Re: Hypothetically speaking

Fiona,

You are in the same boat as me, I've been looking at the nikon D50 or D40 but there are some issues that I need to clear up, lowest iso 200 being one and only 6 megapixels. advice please.

Re: Hypothetically speaking

One of the reasons I went for the Nikon D70s was exactly that. It was bigger and felt better to hold. I was also concerned about the 200 minimum ISO, but it has not been a problem for me.

The D40x has more MP's, but I've got an A2 print on my wall that my 6MP D70s produced and it looks great. I've even got some A4's that my 3MP compact took that are OK too. The larger sensors will be better for enlarging crops though.

Re: Hypothetically speaking

Let's face it Fi, you only have to face the Nikonoiks on here, you have to face me (and potentially Colin) for real, face to face.... think carefully <gggg>

You can't come and play with my 100-400mm L series if you have a Nikon....

Don't you just love emotional blackmail <gggg>
