Which Infrared conversions .

Decided to match up my IR kit with my color camera a 50D. Picked up a couple of
Used 50D's for a great price and excellent condishion that makes them good choices for conversion. I have standard IR and super blue IR in smaller sensors. Question do I go for the Deep Black and White filter with the enhanced color filter. I
Am keeping the smaller sensors as they serve a purpose as they are. I want that 15 meg pix sensor,,,for me 3 of a kind ,,,what would you have for a 3 camera kit for blending ?

Re: Which Infrared conversions .

Sounds good to me if you are going for the Deep Black and White filter with the enhanced color as you have the color IR more or less covered, black & white IR looks more striking compared to the ordinary conversion B&W to me anyway

Re: Which Infrared conversions .

Thanks, I feel pretty much the same way, pretty excited. The cameras have live view and it has a change where I might have to use manual focus. My back is to the sun and I can never see the screen unless I shelter it. That kind of puts a foot in the mud. If I didn't have live view I could have them calibrated to a lens, I still can but I would have to use manual to check or use the infrared marks on the lense. I wrote to the convertion shop but I don't think they will get back. They have gotten so big from when they were small. I was taking IR pictures at my boys wedding, that was fun, they will make good black and whites. I took alot of pictures of the grandkids when they were babies and young kids. I grab an IR and convert it to B&W and that has been a lot of fun and then send it to mom. My drift is I don't want to change my working, processing flow with the cameras. I have a good method now. Hope they are cool and give me some better news, they say that the universal calibration for live view is the way to go on the site at life pixal.

Mailed off with a custom calibration with a 24mm lense, we will see what happens.

Re: Which Infrared conversions .

Had an e-mail drop in and said that they received my two cameras and would start the conversions as I requested. There is a problem with the live view, they didn't mention it and it might take a little extra to set the focus in my eyes so this is good as they are moving along. This is good as they received my cameras in good order which is good. It took two weeks so I will get them back in about two weeks. One note is that I had bought two 24mm to make up my set of 3. I just started to use them when off they went to the conversion. it seems that one is or maybe not focusing as good as the others. Now that I Have all 50D's with the lens focus adjust, I read them everytime it shows the lense on the camera. I am happy about this as we all worked on these kind of problems awhile ago and I have learned how to use it. This one lense might need it. "I am getting excited and really am off in my own little world right now",,Cheers all

Re: Which Infrared conversions .

Received my babies today, unwrapped and took a quicky around the yard. The Deep B&W is perfect and I might not change the white balance on it. All I can say is a real B&W digital camera, expose compose and make something happen. All there is after that is very minimal processing. There is a warning for conversions with cameras and live view. The filters infront of the sensor is thinner and they have a slight light leakage I found to be a minor problem. A quick adjust of the saturation and it was gone. The pictures it took are great and I am very happy snappy. The Enhanced IR is another story as I had to open my raw in Corel Aftershot 2 a fine RAW converter with layers palette. It has under edit a fast track to photoshop but it was finished in Aftershot. I will check out canon software and see what it does with the enhanced filter. ACR finally showed how bad it really is. I use it all the time, for color and standard 720nm conversions but this new for me won't cut the crud in ACR. You might the Adobe would show some class. I love the camera. My wife's brother is passing so I will post up some pictures very soon.

Re: Which Infrared conversions .

Great that you got the new toys. The Deep B&W sounds interesting - look forward to seeing some results from that. I never managed to get ACR to play ball with the Enhanced IR 20D that I have. I used to use DPP to process the RAW file - and then into Photoshop as JPEG.

More recently I've been shooting in JPEG and then straight to Photoshop. Both methods preserve the WB you have in camera.

Re: Which Infrared conversions .

Hi Chris, we just today found out that my wifes brother will be taken off life support. We were waiting as we need time to drive. In the mean time I put togather my IR kit, I have moved from a single sling to a normal two strap back pack. I have room for my 3 50D's and my XTi Standard infrared with the 28-300mm is L zoom. Also have my Wildlife 1D4 with my 100-400 is L in a holster. I have room for one extra lense ,17-40mm. If there are any rusty stuff I grab the XTi and for family pictures I have the 50D with 24mm kit set up or change out to the 17-40mm. I have found that the enhanced infrared works well with Corel Aftershot. It has a Hue slider that brings in the blue skys and white trees. LifePixel says you can set up your camera for the B&W to monochrome in your styles and that removes the slight bet og color crumbs in the pictures. It works very well and it has made the whole upgrade worth it. The drive to california will be a nice break for me. Thanks for checking in on my progress, it's just fine and I will post up some pictures soon.

Re: Which Infrared conversions .

Well Just,,,,,cough. Came home after some family business and checked out my new Enhanced and my Deep Infrared 50D's. Some pictures, enough for now to show. I put one in the Transportation contest and couldn't be happier with the pair. I used DPP for that picture, I am sure that Aftershot will work, but ACR gave the same opening result as it always does. Crazy white balance. I opened the Raw, then transfered to Photoshop as a Tiff and the Deep infrared remained from the white balance from the camera. Glad to be home and look forward to some Photo time. To be clear, I brought my two cameras with me to test the focus for the calibration done with the 24mm. It turns out to focus to infinity every time as did both cameras. This relates to the live view distance with the thinner hot mirror. I tried my 28-300mm and it focused very sharp but at 300 it was in a range slightly less then full infinity. Now because of a warning of difficulty focusing at below 24mm I used my 17-40mm. I worked great at 17mm, I now need to check out my 10-22mm. If it works well, I will try to post a picture here as lenses below 24 can be hard to focus and a manual focus would be used. A good learning trip, but I didn't shoot as many pictures as I would of liked in such beautiful country side. Cheers my friends.

Re: Which Infrared conversions .

Here's a Deep Infrared That I liked, it will be a good example to show just what it was I wanted and what I got. The exposure is taken a little to the dark side on the camera settings but so is the standard IR and the enhanced IR.
I really liked this one as it is one of my first ones when I got the exposure in the zone. Thanks all for letting me walk thru this. I look forward to learning what makes a good black and white picture.

50D Deep Infrared 24mm prime

Cheers

Re: Which Infrared conversions .

Have an update to my kits for those who find an interest in IR. I started all this with older left over from getting newer camera's, that is 20D's. Those of two I had converted to super blue infrared, and the other ultraviolet. I had already converted a new 400D to standard IR a couple of years earlier. What I needed was
A match of camera's and sensors as in size and camera. I needed a color 20D to finish this journey. Even tho I need to put to gather some kind of flash for the UV it is comeplete. I posted a UV flower in photo's for fun and in the bright summer sun it came out fine. The 20D has always been a good camera and has tech properties that make it ideal for IR.
