Interesting chat with Nikon today re warranties
I recently ordered (and paid for) a Nikkor 70-200 f/2.8 VR from Jessops to go with my new D200 and was told it would be around 1 to 2 weeks to come in.
Phoned up today as the 2 weeks is nearly up and was told the actual lead time is 4 to 6 months! ![]() So anyway , I called up Nikon Professional support to confirm this and they said there was indeed a major backlog on these lenses. I then suggested that I could obtain one of these lenses from Hong Kong with a lead time of around 6 days and save myself a fortune. The guy from Nikon agreed and advised me to do this. I was a little surprised due to the warranty on grey imports and questioned this - apparently Nikon will honour the warranty as it's an international warranty and they don't have a problem with grey imports! So there you go - the moral of the story is that anyone considering a grey import lens should go for it! ![]() |

It's been that way for as long as I can remember with Canon lenses so it doesn't suprise me that Nikon have the same policy.
Good to have it confirmed though ![]() |

Thats surprising to hear Nikon say that....but most welcome.
Unfortunately the 200-400 VR is still waaaayyy too much, even from Hong Kong Rich |

I know Sigma are dead against grey import lenses though. I thought it would be the same for both Canon and Nikon - I didn't realise Canon were ok with it too.

As far as Im aware Canon only make issue with their bodies.
Lenses "should" be no problem. |

There was a thread a while back saying that (was it Sigma or Canon?) you would need to have a valid 'tax paid' receipt to get a lens serviced under warranty.

Canon have no problems with lense repairs under guarantee as long as you can provide proof of purchase, no matter which country you bought it from. It is electronics that they are much more fussy on (bodies/flash etc). Although I have read of people managing to get repairs done without charge, Canon do state that they won't cover it and that equipment has to be returned to the country of purchase at the users cost should a repair be required. |

Careful - I was in Nikon today and overheard a conversation from the back office - someone was telling a customer that Nikon would not honour any warranty on products bought overseas - get the bloke's name and ask to speak to his Line Manager - then get it in writing before you buy.
