It's time

Hi Guys

some 8 months ago I got myself into a right mess trying to decide what lens to get , after a lot of advice received on here not lest by Dab hand I got the canon EF-S 15-85 and have been very pleased with the results, , but I am now finding it's a little short for some shots so I think it's time for a lens that covers the next range up, as I'm still a very enthusiastic amateur, my limited skills don't warrant an L lens , I have been looking at the Tamron 70-300 , any views or idea's for an alternative ,

Oh I'm still using my Canon EOS 600D

Thanks

Re: It's time

You might struggle a bit with that lens but since you have mentioned Tamron I'd look at their 70-200mm f2.8 Di LD (IF. Not an L lens but a constant f2.8 is worth considering if you can stretch to 500 odd sovs.

Re: It's time

Yep - the 70-200 f2.8 or the 70 -300 would complement your existing lens, but if you want to get one lens that would cover the complete range the Tamron 18-270 is highly rated.

The choice between the 70-200 and the 70-300 really depends on what you want to do with the lens. The 70-200 could also be used with a converter too.

Stabilisation is a useful tool, but bear in mind that not so long ago it did not exist and people still got great results with long lenses. Good technique and/or a monopod will save you money over stabilisation!

Re: It's time

BIGOLBEAR, AS GRAHAM (DABHAND) HAS SAID YOU WILL NOT GO WRONG WITH A TAMRON 18-270MM.
I HAVE HAD THIS LENS FOR JUST OVER THREE YEARS AND I FIND IT EXCELLENT ON MY CANON 7D.

IT HAS I.S. WHICH IS GREAT, AS I USE MY CAMERA AND THIS LENS WITH ONE HAND AND NEVER HAD ANY PROBLEMS. ALSO I THINK THE WEIGHT WOULD BE LESS THAN A 70-300MM BUT NOT SURE.

Re: It's time

I fully agree with Dab about IS , for the people who have the necessary skills like himself a long lens without IS will produce amazing images , not least the series from fountains monastery , I on the other had require all the tec I can get so a lens with IS it is , I didn't want a one lens for allocations , I had a sigma 18-200, which was Ok but as a walk about lens a little lumpy so I invested in the 17-85 which I love so now need a lens to complement it for the occasions when need long focal length , I did do as suggested which was to use my sigma over a period and see what focal length the majority of photographs where taken on it was if memory serves in the 17-70 range with 20% at the 200mm range and the majority of those requiring more .
so Ideally 70 -300 I think will do the job I do like the look of the Tamron with that range and a resonable price at 560 on Amazon , as I have no idea will that be ok on my 600D

Re: It's time

Hi bigolebear, I am trying to be helpful here, so please take it as a view on lens. I use a 100-400mm L lens. It takes cate of the long pictures very nicely for me. A class L lens is an investment but a good one. I have prime lenses and enjoy the hunt they bring when looking for a good angle or distance to take from. I use my feet, a zoom lens can let you for get that whole world of photography. It's like this, 17-40, 24, 50, 85, 100 and 100-400mm. You can see as I did that most of my shooting is in a range of 24 to 100mm, my point is none of my primes except one is an L, so you can get great use out of a prime as I think they are under used.

I dont think you always need a big lens to catch them lill birds, a change of technique is all thats required. Check out some of my pics and you will see most are taken with a 200mm or smaller lens.

Re: It's time

I cancelled the order 20 min after placing it ,
I read a article about prime lens and then found Sigma 70-200mm f2.8, which it a bit more money but seems a better lens than the Tamron. to be honest I'll leave it alone for a while until I can get about more (3 weeks into a Knee replacement) as it stands all I know s I would like a longer lens thats as good if not better than my 15-85mm.

Re: It's time

I used to have the old Sigma 70-200 f2.8 and it was a great lens. I only sold it when I got my D700 as for some reason the camera would not recognise it as a full frame lens and kept cropping down to around 5MP. I used it with a Sigma 1.4x converter and it performed very well.

I think it is significantly dearer than the 70-300 though - 70-300 around 265, 70-200 f2.8 around 834. Prices from Camera Price Buster UK today. (both stabilised)

Re: It's time

May I add my two peneth, I am not a Canon user but it really don't matter what camera you use does it! I have all sorts of problems in what lens I should use and buy, you see I travel a lot and weight restrictions at airports cause me all sorts of problems my answer to all this was a 1 camera body + a 28-300mm zoom I use a FX body this lens was the answer to all my travel problems, oh by the way its a great combination...
