It's time to get a bag

Hi snappers

Right i have just bought a Canon 100-400L IS USM , the next two lenses will be
Canon EF 100mm F2.8 Macro USM and a 24-70 of some sorts. I have a battery grip on my Canon 350d, will be carrying spare cards-well the usual stuff.

I need a bag, that won't break the bank or my back carrying it.
I would like a rucksack type.

Any idea's. I would like one so i can leave the 100-400 mounted to the camera.

Max about £100.00

Thanks

Lee

Re: It's time to get a bag

Hello Gary,

Thanks

I have been looking at the Lowepro Mini Trekker AW. It now seems to come with a rain cover included.

Just after a few thoughts and user input.

Might take the plunge later.

Re: It's time to get a bag

As I said in my review of this bag, it's gone all oround the world with me and taken some serious abuse, I use it on a daily basis and it does get thrown about the place in all conditions and still looks like new. I would highly reccomend this bag.

Re: It's time to get a bag

According to my wife, I've got more bags than cameras - hmm, I think she might be right...

At the moment, my every-day bag is a Billingham Hadley, which is nicely dirty and contains an Eos 10D with 100-300, an Olympus E10 and a Coolpix 990 with the 24mm more or less permanently fitted. I've never been a fan of changing lenses and the problems with dust in DSLRs is just another excuse not to!

With the leather shoulder pad for the Hadley, I can carry a ten pound load all day without strain, and I'm not a big chap. Backpacks are fine for travelling but I find they get in the way of taking pictures.

I'm a big fan of Tamracs and have an Expedition 8, Pro 8 bag and misc straps! The Expedition 8 is a 1st generation - the newer 2nd generation look fantastic and I've my sights set on the Expedition 7!

Re: It's time to get a bag

Hi Snappers

Thanks for your replies.

The main problem is that i have quite bad A.S(ankylosing spondylitis). So i get really bad shoulder ache. I really would like a bag with good padded shoulder straps, i think i would need to carry as least as possible too.

The Tamracs look like the have more padding on the straps.

I will try and get a look and feel of a couple before i take the plunge.

Buying a 100-400 won't help my A.S either

No, no! Make sure you have a good hip belt (which the Tamracs do have, but think the Lowepros are OK for one). Then ensure that it is used (and shoulder straps are loosened off - enough to prevent pack wobbling around but allowing weight on the hip) and the weight is carried on the hip NOT the shoulders! Makes an enormous difference!

Hi

I get shoulder ache just sitting down or walking for a long time . I was thinking of the belt strap and how to use it to best affect.

Thanks for the tip

On the very rare photographic trips I manage to get, I find I get more earache than anything else.

This is because my wife is usually with me.

Ah but the lowpro has the hip strap and a chest strap which relieves the pressure on the shoulders and the back, No really it does, the amount is amazing!!!!

Re: It's time to get a bag

LOL! The chest strap (which the Tamrac has as well, so there!) is to stop the shoulder straps slipping sideways off the shoulders (as the hip strap is taking all the weight so they tend to be looseish!)

Re: It's time to get a bag

I'll agree with Mark, the tamrac is good. I've got the Canon 100-400 & it fits in the expedition 5 fine, along with at least 2 other lenses and flash gun. It is a bit smaller, than the Expedition 7 & 8, but they were a bit big as I'm rather short.
The 5 does come with a waist belt as well, but it's a small webbing one, not the padded variety.
If it gets a bit heavy though, I just make my husband & son carry it for me

HI

Update time...........Just bought a Lowepro Mini Trekker AW from the nice lady at Jessops, knocked a bit of money off so not much more expensive than off the web.

Its a tightish fit with the battery grip attatched. Plenty of room to fill it with more weight

Thanks for your advice.

Re: It's time to get a bag

I have had ankylosing spondylitis in my spine for several years and it is not going to get better. I have the Lowepro Mini Trekker and it is very comfortable indeed so I would most certainly recommend it.

Mine has a built in rain hood that covers the bag and prevents ingression of water very efficiently. It has very comfortable straps, with both being well padded and two belt clasps, one across the chest which means you don't spend all your times shifting the bag back up onto your shoulders properly, it doesn't ride down at all, and the other across the waist which means the hips carry some of the weight so the load is spread well.

I have the Canon 20D complete with BG-E2 grip and 5 lenses in my bag:

100-400mm IS L (Can be left on camera in bag)
28-70mm f2.8 (older version of the 24-70mm) L
100mm f2.8 macro
17-40mm f4 L
50mm f1.8

Along with those I have my 550EX flashgun, filters, batteries, other sundry items.

I got this bag to replace a bag I hated (Town & Country, Jessops own brand) which was the most uncomfortable bag I have had to carry. I absolutely adore my Lowepro Mini Trekker and would recommend it to anyone, especially if they have spinal conditions that make some bags very uncomfortable.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: It's time to get a bag

I use a thinktank Speed Racer, it'll take a 100-400 attached to the camera (or a 70-200 which is slightly longer) or it'll take the 100-400 next to the camera with another lens attached. There's room for a couple more smaller lenses and lots of bit and pieces.

This is more of a waist pack than a backpack but having used both I much prefer the waistpack, quick and easy access to all your stuff. It has a wide shoulder strap and a good big padded belt. I find it very comfortable, fully loaded over a long walk I occasionally rotate it round my waist a little to move the load.

cheers

Dan
