Jessops Price Promise!!!!

I Am Thinking Of Buying A Tamron 18-200mm Lens For My D200. The Prices I Have Seen So Far Are Between 247- 267. I Saw An Advert Somewhere Saying Jessops Would Beat Any Internet Prices, But On Their Website They Are Selling This Lens For 324 For A Nikon And Canon Fit, They Say They Have A Price Promise, So Why Are They Charging Nearly 80 More? Any Ideas . Are They Just Putting The Prices Up For Christmas, Is It A Good Time To Buy This Or Should I Wait Till After Christmas, When Prices Might Come Down

Re: Jessops Price Promise!!!!

they are probably chacing their luck, but check the small print in their price peomise, if there are no loopholes and they refuse to uphold their promise hit them with a threat of
false advertising and tell them u are going to trading standards. that usually does the trick! lol

Re: Jessops Price Promise!!!!

Jessops price promise isn't worth the paper it isn't written on quite frankly! This latest one, the 'Not even on the internet' has more exceptions than a very exceptional thing indeed! The only internet companies they are agreeing to price match are companies which are wholly based in Mainland UK. So not only do all the great deals from Hong Kong and so forth not count, you can't even get a price match against a company like 7dayshop.com who are based in Guernsey.

They have always had a shop price match but I tried to get a match and got blown out completely. This is a fair while ago now admittedly (but by all accounts nothing much has changed) I went in to buy the Canon 75-300mm lens that they were selling for 179 at the time. I went in, advert in hand, to show them that Park cameras in London were selling the exact same lens for 139, a huge 40 difference. The sales guy went off, spoke to the manager, phoned head office, came back and said: 'Sorry, can't do it.' I argued that if they claim to price match then they don't get to pick and choose which ones they match with if they are within their stated promise or else the promise means absolutely nothing and shouldn't be used as an advertising tool.

Of he went, manager came back this time: 'Ok, we will knock 10 off so you can have it for 169. After all,' he said, 'otherwise you'll have to order from them, wait two weeks till they have them back in stock (nobody had ever said they didn't have any and i knew they did!) then pay for postage which will probably cost another 20 and will take another week to arrive.'

LOL, nice try mr silly Jessops manager but I went out of the shop, phoned the number in the advert, ordered the lens and paid for it. The lovely lady on the other end said 'It's actually just gone 2pm but I'll run down to the warehouse and see if they can get it into today's posting.' And guess what, she did! I received it in my hand the very next day for 139 plus 3.99 postage and packing! I thought about going in to Jessops and showing the manager how good sales companies work but decided it wasn't worth it. He was too thick to actually go back to his bosses and say 'Hey, we are getting creamed here, maybe we need to do something!'

So I no longer buy major purchases from Jessops unless they have a very special offer on that genuinely is the cheapest without having to ask for a price match. Given that since then I have spent over 4000 on camera equipment, the guy really did cut his own throat as I am a loyal customer to shops that show loyalty to me :o)

Cheers,
Rob

Jessops (cameras2u) will price match only if you buy from them on-line. They won't price match in-store.

I'll buy in a shop and pay a bit over the odds if I feel I'm getting good service, good advice etc. (Dale Photographic in Leeds for example), it's along time since I felt like that in Jessops, you might as well shop at Dixons.

PS, Woody I don't know about anyone else but I find your posts a real effort to read with all those capital letters and lack of seperated paragraphs you may find that fewer people read your posts becuase of it (I've certainly skipped a few).

Re: Jessops Price Promise!!!!

I would go out of my way to avoid Jessops in the future.

When I bought my 5d, the sales guy was trying to convince me that I should buy the minolta with the "anti-shake thing" coz it's great for taking photo's while on buses

He then produced a A4 folder with cpoies of "his work" as he was a photograper and just worked in his spare time for Jessops

No, you misheard him Cotter. He didn't say the Minolta was better, those were just the words that came out of his mouth. In his head the words were 'Now, which camera was it my manager told me I get 10 extra commission for selling? Oh yes, that Minolta one that isn't selling too well. Ok, I am sure I can bluff my way through this one, let's give it a go....'

Fortunately he was up against someone who knew what he was talking about. Beggards belief that he would think he could sway a 5D customer to change his mind and buy the Minolta because it has an anti-shake device LOL.

I entirely agree with Danpen, if you have a local Photographic shop, often fairly small but with guys who really do know their business, it is definitely worth paying a few quid more to know you have got the right product and if you go back with a problem won't just say 'Hang on sir, I'll have a look in the instruction book!'

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Jessops Price Promise!!!!

Woody, neither I nor anyone else said we find it offensive, please don't put words in our mouths. What we said was we find it more difficult to read.

I have not seen anything about this before, probably because I have skipped them. Had I know you have a disability that is causing this then I would happily have made an extra effort. Now I know, I will do so.

Just because we find it difficult does not mean it is a big issue. Please don't assume that because you have answered something before, that all 1,435 Pixalo members have read it.

I hope you will not leave Pixalo but will instead stay and enjoy the place, capitals or not. I wonder if I might make a suggestion. I think most people would actually find all capitals easier to read than a capital for every first letter so maybe try just putting the Caps Lock on and typing that way.

For people to compare, here's what the two would look like:

This Is Typing With The First Letter Of Each Word A Capital Letter So That You Can See What It Looks Like Next To A Message All in Capital Letters. What Do You Think Between the Two? The All Capitals Version or The One Capital Letter Per Word Version?

THIS IS TYPING WITH EACH LETTER OF THE WORD A CAPITAL LETTER SO THAT YOU CAN SEE WHAT IT LOOKS LIKE NEXT TO A MESSAGE ALL IN CAPITAL LETTERS. WHAT DO YOU THINK BETWEEN THE TWO? THE ALL CAPITALS VERSION OR THE ONE CAPITAL PER WORD VERSION?

If it isn't possible to change anyway then you just carry on as normal Woody and we'll make the effort to read it :o)

Cheers,
Rob

Woody, please don't take offense. I also have not said that I find anything offensive about your posts, just that I do find them harder to read, as Rob has said now I know there's a good reason why I will make more effort. I've only been using this forum regularly for a short while and had not seen any previous explanation.

Re: Jessops Price Promise!!!!

Thank You Rob And Danpen For Your Replies.
I Probably Used The Wrong Word When I Said Offensive, But On Other
Forums I Have Been On, I Have Been Told That People Find It Offensive,
As They Say Using Capitals Is Like Shouting. I Therefore Thought You
Meant The Same. Rob I Don't Know What Goes Wrong Between The Time
I Type My Message In To The Time It Is Displayed, Only I Can Only Type In
Capitals.
I Do Not Do It Deliberately , I Don't Know How It Is Happening.
I Am Looking At What I Am Typing Now, And It Is All In Capitals,
It Is Only When I Submit It, It Changes. I Have No Explanation For This.
Please Accept My Apologies, To You Both Rob And Danpen.

P.s. If This Does Not Read In Capitals I Don't Know What's Wrong

As to the typing if caps dont work they dont work, as has already been said it is not a big deal. I am sure if you and your wife can deal with all that you have to deal with then we can make an effort too!

so be warned..... leave at your peril

I would not like Woody to leave Pixalo either.

Just to bring another aspect to the discussion, Rob managed to type a sentence in caps, and I've seen earlier posts by Woody that were also in caps, so something must have changed recently.

HERE IS A TEST WITH MY CAPS LOCK ON.

In the meantime Woody, carry on posting.

Re: Jessops Price Promise!!!!

I've just had another thought on this. Presuming that 'word' is the programme that is used to type messages, if you go the 'format' menu and select 'font', in the 'effects' section you can check a 'caps' box. This forces caps regardless of the caps lock or shift keys. You might have to click on the 'default' button.

There is also a 'change case', option where you can, well, change the case. If this is set to 'title case', it will, I presume, put a cap on the front of every word. I think this only works if you select existing text in word, though.

Anyone else got a view on the mystery of the title case poster?

Re: Jessops Price Promise!!!!

I think it could well have something to do with the font being used but not sure. Woody, check the font and see what name it is. If it isn't Arial, change it to that as this one is clearest to read and should type properly.

But don't worry about it, it's not a big issue. I am glad we now understand each other as I would have been gutted to think you had left because of something I said. I wouldn't dream of saying something deliberately to offend nor something insensitive to your situation. Your presence here is greatly valued by all :o)

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Jessops Price Promise!!!!

THANKS GRAHAM, GLAD I GOT THERE IN THE END.
SO FAR WITH THE PS5, JUST LEARNING THE BASICS, VERY IMPRESSED WITH WHAT
I HAVE SEEN SO FAR.

IT DID COME WITH A USER MANUAL, BUT I ALSO BOUGHT, "THE MISSING MANUAL"
BY BARBARA BRUNDAGE. THIS IS A VERY GOOD BOOK, OVER 500 PAGES.

BUT LIKE EVERTHING , ONE STEP AT A TIME THEN READ THE NEXT PAGE
I WAS NOT AWARE YOU COULD DO SO MUCH WITH THIS. PROBABLY TAKE ME A
COUPLE OF YEARS TO FIGURE IT OUT. BUT I WILL GET THERE EVENTUATELY.

Re: Jessops Price Promise!!!!

That's brilliant Woody, way to go :o) Nice and easy to read now so will not be missing any more of your posts.

Glad to see you have got Photoshop. Just so that you know, I am a Photoshop tutor so if you need any help with anything, please don't hesitate to ask ok? And if you find something you think would benefit from a tutorial being made, also let me know and I'll see what i can do. Tutorials are better simply because it means more people get to see them and can benefit from them.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Jessops Price Promise!!!!

ROFL.... use Photoshop to its full extent? If you ever manage that Woody you'll be in demand all over the world as a speaker, indeed as a genius!

It is reckoned that even Photoshop professionals only use PS up to about 30% of its power and ability simply because it is so huge and is used by many different spheres for many different purposes. For example, we use it a lot for such things as adjusting contrast, saturation, sharpness, etc. But then a graphics designer might not use any of those tools at all but will use a variety of other tools that we never even look at.

You have a good book there so you'll see what it can do for us as photographers and that is the only bits you need to focus on at this stage. Trust me, that is plenty! The great thing is, you can learn loads by simply playing around. Do it with a copy of a photo so you are not touching the original. That way you can do whatever you like, see how things work and don't worry if you end up with a picture that looks like an aerial view of muddy Manchester! You can't do anything wrong, just things that do diffeent things :o)

Have fun and remember we can help you out when you get stuck.... most of the time

Cheers,
Rob

Re: Jessops Price Promise!!!!

Hi Rob, Sorry I Should Rephrase What I Said, About Using Photoshop
To It's Full Extent. What I Meant Was Being Able To Use It Properly,
Instead Of Just Playing With It.

I Know I Would Never Be Able To Use All The Features, And As You
Pointed Out, Will Have No Need To.
I Am Enjoying Using It, The Missing Manual Is A Great Book, I Am Just
Experimenting With Photos I Have, That Do Not Matter If I Make A Mistake.

As You Have Said, Not To Use Ones That Are Important. I Am Making
Mistakes, But That Is All Part Of Learning. I Will Not Bore You Yet With
Trivial Questions. I Will Wait Till I Am Really Stuck, And The Book Isn't
Any Help. Thanks For The Help And Advice Rob.
Cheers

I guess it is something to do with me being a teacher Woody, we have a strange way of thinking.... but you know, I can't remember EVER being bored by a genuine question that someone wanted to know the answer to. I have taught the same subject for nearly 20 years and get tasked the same questions over and over again but I enjoy helping out with the answer each and every time.

So please don't worry on that score. I teach because I enjoy helping students, not because I want to test my knowledge of something :o) If you have a question, no matter how basic you might think it is, I will personally GUARANTEE you there is someone else reading the answer that will be glad of it because they didn't know it either. So by asking you are helping others who are perhaps a bit shy or whatever.

The great thing about Pixalo is that nobody EVER thinks anyone is stupid just because they don't know something. We are all learning and if ever I stop then I will lose interest in life itself!

Cheers,
Rob
