Is this just cheap cos it's cr*p?

Nikon AF Nikkor 70-300mm f/4-5.6 G Lens - Onestop Digital

Nikon 70-300 G, have read reviews, not buying cos I don't need it, but just wondering....why is it so cheap, yet not recommended like the nifty is?

I don't know much about it so I'm only surmising - it's only DG rated not APO or other quality acronyms. If it's that cheap then the glass will be cheap. At 300mm you are bound to get lens shake so with loads of light and a sturdy tripod you might get a decent shot. But I'm not knocking it...just my thoughts.

I have this lens. It is a decent lens. I go back and forth between it and my kit lens. I have a Sigma which I rarely use, but they are three different sizes as well. The two Nikon/Nikkor lens seem to be much sharper than the Sigma.

I was wondering the same when i seen this lens for sale. Only £70 if i'm right. And the other one is £340.

Re: Is this just cheap cos it's cr*p?

Short answer is that you get what you pay for.

The 70-300 G is cheap but has poor contrast and feels cheaply made, compared to the 70-300 VR ED version which is far more solid and the VR works well. But its much more expensive.

Re: Is this just cheap cos it's cr*p?

But then surely you have to question the greatness of such lenses as the 50mm 1.8? (nifty), it's even cheaper. I know that good wide range zooms tend to be mopre expensive, but still...

Re: Is this just cheap cos it's cr*p?

50mm 1.8 can't be compared to a zoom,. design of the standard lens is simple and contains less glass (it's hard to make a poor 50mm lens these days)

there's 3 similar nikon lenses the 70-300 / 70-300 ED and the 70-300 VR,. the newest VR is a different internal design (apart from the obvious addition of VR) and looks very good from all the sample pics I've seen (I haven't tried one) the cheapest one isn't great and I'd def recommned the VR version if you will use the lens much

Re: Is this just cheap cos it's cr*p?

I've got one and I'm only just now learning to get the best from it.

70-200mm F8 max aperture
200-300mm F11 max aperture.

Otherwise there is a lot of softness in the image.

It's noisy as hell, is pretty slow to focus and has a tendancy to hunt.

That said, I got mine brand new for £45 delivered so I've got a bit of a nerve complaining
