Kenko 3x telecon.

Right. I've wanted a sharper, longer focal length lens for some things now and again, and I was wondering whether buying the Kenko PRO 300 DG AF 3x Teleconverter for Nikon AF would be worth it. It'd mean a max aperture of f/8, but for shooting wildlife in places like Richmond park or further afield, would that suffice? Would you really want to be stopping and lower than that anyway?
Also, would the results from this combo be sharper / higher IQ than with the Sigma 70-300? I know it's a lot to ask, but come on you lot, rack yer brainies.

Thanks

Jack

In fact, scrap that, I don't think it's worth it.

I think you are wise Jack .I had a 3x on my Minota and it was very poor and the aperture went too small on a 70-300mm. Especially wildlife
Its rather like using a Mobile phone to take pictures. Its ok for evidence and record of a rare Eagle or something but you would probably not bother to take a frame and place it in a album and enter it in a competition I think.
Regards Brian

Re: Kenko 3x telecon.

Oh forgot to mention, if anyone else wanted to give opinions, I'd be using it with the Tamron 90mm (f/2.8). Does that change any thoughts? Probably not, from what I've read elsewhere....

Re: Kenko 3x telecon.

I've never used one but heard horrible things about it. A 2x convertor is a last resort for me so I imagine a 3X might disappoint. The Sigma 70-300 will almost certainly be better. I can recommend the Nikon 70-300 VR it's not quite at it's best at 300 but still good and the VR works very well. I imagine you could get one for what you could sell your Sigma for plus the cost of the 3x Tcon.

Re: Kenko 3x telecon.

Hi Jack,
I have somewhat of a lesser 3x something (kenco) as I am not at home,"it's an older version".
I had it on my 50mm compact macro the other night, fairly good lighting and a pod. The auto focus worked which surprised me, but the pictures looked OK,,I pulled a 30 second exposure at f16,,,,,that's about the last of that, I think I can make it work once in awhile and pull it out. Have had it for about 5 or 6 years. I'll keep it but I have never posted a picture much less shown anybody a picture taken with it,,
