Kenko Teleconverter Compatibility

Will a Kenko 1.4X Teleplus Pro 300 Teleconverter For Nikon AF-I & AF-D work with a Nikon 70-300mm VR lens and D80 body? If so are there any precautions one needs to take? Thanks.

Re: Kenko Teleconverter Compatibility

From research I have found following advice

- For both types of lenses Autofocus will work with lenses f/4 or faster
- Autofocus may work in some conditions with lenses having a maximum aperture of f/5.6.
- AI lenses will show correct f/stop & focal length taking into account 1.4x
- AD lenses will show original f/stop & focal length, but will still provide correct exposure
- VR will continue to work on a lens where AF works with the TC.

Best advice is to try & get your hands on the Teleconvertor in a shop & try your camera / lens combination out first, before departing with your money. I recently bought a Kenko 2x convertor which worked perfectly with my Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8 , plus Nikon f/1.8 D, but had compatibility problems with the Sigma HSM lens I had.

Re: Kenko Teleconverter Compatibility

Just tried it with a D200 and an older 70-300 non VR I had in cupboard and it worked fine AF was obviously slower but functional at the 300 (5.6 end). On this lens it reported the original f/stop but I expect on yours it will be fine. Likewise VR works on my lenses with this Tcon.

A word of warning it's getting very slow for a 420 (600+ 35mm equivalent) though. Today in very good light I was at ISO 400 to get 1/250 wide open and with these lenses and Tcons you don't want to be wide open.
