Laptop suggestions

I was looking at getting a new laptop while I'm in the States at the end of the year.

It will solely be used for photo/camcorder purposes. I would like to take it with me on holidays to download pics at the end of each day.

Obviously with the camera bag filling up further each week with the next "must have" accessory

, the lighter/smaller it is the better.

I like the look of the 12" applebooks.

Does anybody know if the Powerbook is worth the extra cash over the ibook for the use I have in mind?

Dont know too much about the apple side of things nowadays !

Personally i think any laptop is going to be a pain, i took mine to the big cat day, but only because i knew i would be close to the car ! LOL

Do you really need a laptop ? or would one of the many backup devices be more useful ? like the epson p2000 or a jobo giga vue etc etc ?

At the end of the day a laptop will always be heavier and more cumbersome, and take up much more space in a bag !

Just my 2p worth ! Ill :coat:lol

I recently ressurected my Compaq Presario Laptop bought a couple of years ago but not used that much as I have a company lappie and a pretty high specced main PC.

I took it on my Edinburgh trip and it has all the Canon Software, Raw Shooter Esentials, Photoshop CS2 loaded and also has a DVD burner.
60gb HDD, 512mb Ram and P3 2.8Ghz processor.

I could get back to the hotel each night and offload, edit and burn to DVD.
I also have a car charger. If I'd had an internet connection I could even have uploaded them to my gallery.

If your'e going on an 'expedition' and know you are going to take loads of shots theyre great.
The only thing that worried me a little was leaving it in the hotel or the car as I didn't want to lug it around with me. (I hid it under the bed!)

If you don't want the facility to edit in field, a back up storage device should more than do the trick.

Is it feasible to use an Ipaq? You can get up to 4 gig cards these days.

From my laptop experiences, the screens are not suitable for editing purposes.

If you wish to use if for backing up and viewing try to find something smaller, like the Epson P2000.

The newer laptops with clearview have much better definition and colour redition capabilities. Obviously they will not match top quality monitors but they have come on leaps and bounds in recent years.

You can tell weather something is a keeper or not much easier on a laptop than any other portable device but as always the weight and size is the trade off.

I did look at an Epson P2000 last week, and was very impressed with the screen. I have been down the line of portable hard drive in the past, and lost a lot of good pics from Africa when the thing broke while I was out there (Archos).

Epson at £330 and ibook for £550 (USA), I thought the ibook was better value for money, and I could also burn the pics to CD if I am worried a hard drive may break again.
