Re: lens advice

That is a tricky one Shane. Gaining a stop loosing some range. Unless there is good reason to change I'm wondering if it is worth it.

How much do you use the 12-24? When you do use it, are you wishing for a wider aperture? Do you rarely use the long end?

I think that you need to be able to tick all of those boxes before buying.

Re: lens advice

By all accounts the 11-16 gets good press and I was half a mind to get this or a Nikon super-wide. I was only held back by a desire to go full frame, where I bought the 17-35 f/2.8 over the 16-35 f/4. Usually the gain for landscapes is not that important by getting a stop wider.

However, this doesn't solve your problem, but what might help you make a decision will require a little bit of work. There is a very useful program called exiftool that is down-loadable from ExifTool by Phil Harvey. Among other things, you can ask it to give you a list of all the focal lengths that you use, both DX and FX focal lengths. You can then put the output into a spreadsheet a get a graph that will profile your preference for focal length for over as long a period as you want to look back. It needs some effort but can be useful for deciding about such issues as buying another lens.

Re: lens advice

As GS says ExifTool is a good piece of software which requires a bit of tolerance on the users part. For simplicity, don't forget that LR will filter your images by lens.

Re: lens advice

Tokina 11-16 is supposed to be a staggeringly good lens under any setting isn't it.

Sure you won't be disappointed if you make the switch.

Re: lens advice

I was very interested in getting the 11-16 this past year. Thankfully I thought twice, because I just went full frame. Now I'm looking at the 16-28 with longing eyes..

one thing at a time...
