Lens Advice Please

Since I bought my FX Nikon I have been restricted to not have a full range of lenses mainly down the the cost of replacing them.

I am going to buy myself a new lens soon and I am looking at either a nice wide angle sub 24mm or something to fill the 70-200mm range.

Currently I have a Nikon 50mm f/1.4, Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 and my big Sigma 150-500mm.

So for Nikon I have the two in my sight.

70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR NIKKOR
14-24mm f/2.8G ED AF-S NIKKOR

I won't buy both at once because they have a combined value of around 3k.

I then had a little look at Sigma and they have the following equivalents

70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG OS HSM
12-24mm f/4.5-5.6 DG HSM II

They have a combined value of only 1,500.

What do you all think? Should I be looking at the Sigma? Sure the Wide angle is not as fast as the Nikon but the 70-200mm is around 700 less than the Nikon.

Advice please.

Re: Lens Advice Please

Are you likely to need the very wide angle? If not, there are lenses that are not quite so wide, and are cheaper.

With regard to the 70-200, have you considered the Nikkor 80-200D? Until recently, this lens was still available new for around 650, but I can't see it listed now.

This looks very interesting. Grays of Westminster have an AF-S 80-200 (same as my one) for 1095. Many thought that this lens was superior to the 70-200 vr mk1 that superseded it.

NEW CONDITION BODY! Signs of use on the hood and tripod foot only. Boxed, with hood and case. Nikon’s penultimate zoom offered for 1550 before prices skyrocketed. A culmination of some 25 years of research. Exceptionally fast zooming and offered here at a very special rate.

This is a cracking lens and Grays will give you a 12 month warranty, or 18 months if you subscribe to Nikon Ownner for a year for 59.

Thanks Graham.

I don't really need the wide angle and am more inclined for the 70-200mm range lens.

The 80-200 looks interesting, although it will probably be purchased around Xmas after I tip-off my wife. I like to do a bit of research first.

Some great shots there.

I also had not seen Grays site before so I've bookmarked it. Thanks.

Re: Lens Advice Please

The AF-S 80-200 f2.8 is a rare beast.

If you are passing anywhere near me when you are dashing around the country you are welcome to give my one a try.

I've got the 14-24 f2.8 too, and it is a great lens, but if you don't need the widest end it is a lot of money.

I would like a wider angle to get some more creative shots but would no doubt get more use out of the 70-200mm

Do you have any thoughts on the Sigma 70-200mm. It is around 1000 new.

Re: Lens Advice Please

I had a Sigma 70-200 f2.8 before I bought the Nikkor. It is a great lens. My one was offered on sale on here for 400 and it came with nine months warranty left, but got no takers Sold it on e-bay for 480.

Neither the Sigma or the Nikkor had stabilisation, but that is not important to me.

For occasional wide use you would probably be better off with a used wide zoom as the new prices are still going to be around 500. The Sigma 12-24 would seem a good bet, but also check out the Nikkor 16-35 and the Tokina 16-28 f2.8

Ken Rockwell says it is as good as the Nikkor 14-24 f2.8 at less than half the price.

Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8 Review

456 at one-stop digital.

Decisions, decisions.......

Here are some sample shots taken with the Sigma 70-200 f2.8 - some are mine, and I have some on there with a Sigma 1.4x TC on it too.

http://www.pixalo.com/community/came...tml#post183024

I'd still think very carefully on the Nikkor AF-S 80-200 though

Re: Lens Advice Please

I'm a Canon user so can't comment on Nikon lenses but I do generally go for Sigma over the (in my opinion) overpriced Canon equivalents as generally in most tests they seem to come out as well if not occasionally better and as you say for half the price.

I recently picked up a second hand Sigma 17-70 f2.8 - 4.5 and it's amazing, it's hardly ever off my camera and the images it produces are excellent.
