Lens choice?

Hi guys, need some help, thinking of another lens to get to use for night shots & seascapes that goes with my Tokina 11-16 F/2.8 for a bit more reach when i need it, have a few in mind to do the job,

1.Tokina 16-50mm F/2.8
2.Sigma 17-50mm F2.8
3 Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8
4. Nikon 35mm F/1.8

Anyone any feedback from any of these? cheers simpbow

Re: Lens choice?

Tamron is getting very good reviews recently.

Don't know about the others but I expect that they will all be satisfactory.

Have you sold your Nikkor 18-70?

Good point. You could always up the ISO to compensate while you make up your mind

Re: Lens choice?

Personally i would look at the 35mm prime lens first - it has an excellent reputation, but I do not own one, because I've avoided DX lenses except the 16-85 that I bought with the camera (you don't find them that frequently for sale 2nd hand either - a good sign). I do have an old 35mm f/2.8 Ai lens that I consider sharper than any of my zooms at the same length, the same goes for my 24mm f/2.8. The only obvious issue is lack of immediate flexibility in primes, e.g. you have to change them.

There is also something to watch when buying a large aperture especially at the wider angle end - "coma aberration". If the lens behaves badly wide open with pinpoints of light becoming tangential oval shapes near the edge of the frame instead of round dots which won't be a lot of use for your night shots, unless you are doing star trails. There are 2 lenses I can think of that do this the Nikon 50mm f/1.2 and the Nikon 17-35mm f/2.8, both lenses not in your question but they have made me aware of the problem on full frame. in all other respects they are sharp, and the problem is not noticeable in daylight. So if you read any reviews on a lens and there is any mention of coma, forget that lens for night shots.

Re: Lens choice?

Grease Spot talked about an 18-85mm, even though my camera is different I reach for my 17-85mm more often then my 17-40L just for the extra reach, it makes a difference. It is sharp as the L lens just not made as good but if you like that extra reach when you only carry two extra lenses it works.
