Lens Choices.... Nikkor...

Hey..
I currently have a Nikon D90 with an everyday lens (Nikkor 18-200mm VR and a Sigma 10-20mm f/3.5), but would like up upgrade to a Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G.

It's either this lens or purchase 2 x Sigma's..! Perhaps the 150mm f/2.8 Macro and Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8.......

I generally take landscape and architecture.... with a bit of people work.....

Am I crazy about spending 1,000 on Nikon glass when I can get a couple of Sigma lens instead?

Interested in anyone's opinion of the Nikkor 17-55mm....

Have a look at the Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8, it is very highly regarded.

It rocks

Great lens - always on my camera.

However - it is essentially a standard zoom lens in the focal length range, so if you are doing a lot of shots outside of the 17-55 range, you might be better off with a longer range - maybe the Sigma 70-200 f2.8. Bear in mind that it is a bigger and heavier lens to carry though.

I can't agree more with Dabhand. It definitely is a very good lens. Second hand they are a lot cheaper by the way

Re: Lens Choices.... Nikkor...

I have owned the Sigma 18-50 which I sold on here, I currently have the Nikon 17-55 2.8 and the Tamron 17-50 2.8. Sharpness wise there is very little to chose between them with the Nikon just having the edge overall. The Nikon is faster and quieter to focus, has better contrast and is less prone to flare. It is also a good deal more robust and is weatherproof. The downside is that it is bulkier and heavier and the Sigma can focus closer I think.

Re: Lens Choices.... Nikkor...

I had a (cheaper) Tamron lens a few years ago.... I found that the AF was REALLY loud.... I just couldn't get on with it... (18-200mm)... Is the Tamron 17-55mm f/2.8 better in this regard?

Re: Lens Choices.... Nikkor...

I have had the chance to use the Nikkor 17-55 and I own the Tamron lens. If you can afford it I would go with the Nikkor. I can shoot anywhere with the Nikkor but I would never take my Tamron out in the rain.
