Lens Comparrison - which one

I have a Canon 75-300 mm at the moment but its is a little tired and I am looking to change. I have been offered a Sigma 70-300 APO DG f4-5.6 Macro for a good price.

Does anyone have any experience with this and how does it compare to the Canon?

Are there any advantages and disatvantages of either.

Thanks

Re: Lens Comparrison - which one

The Sigma is really no better/worse than the one you already have. If you can afford it, the Canon 70-300 IS is very good - an improvement on the 75-300 optically, plus the stabilisation is extremely useful.

Re: Lens Comparrison - which one

what I was thinking is though, will the macro facility be any good? Will I get better close up shots than I can with the Canon (I expect yes)

Re: Lens Comparrison - which one

Slightly better... From memory the Canon is max 1:4 and the Sigma is 1:3, but I may be wrong there. Either way, you'd not get anything like true macro (1:1), and if that's what you're after a better bet would probably be the Sigma 105mm macro or (if you can run to it) the Canon 100mm macro. Both of those are true macro lenses and also have better image quality than the mid-priced zooms.

Re: Lens Comparrison - which one

The 70-300mm Sigma is one lens I was glad to see the back of. The front element rotates when focusing which makes it difficult to use a polariser or grad filter.

It's a bit of a light hog too. The APO DG version is the one to go for if anything, but I'd wait and get something faster if I were you. Certainly, if you can afford it, get one with IS if you're going for a long end over 200mm. IS is cool.

I agree with silkstone that if you're keen on macro you should get a 1:1 prime, but if you want to dabble then the macro side of the 70-300 was OK with plenty of light, although the images needed quite a bit of pp in my (limited) experience.

If you want a super-zoom I can recommend the Sigma 18-200mm with OS (IS) but I think that Canon have recently brought out a rival for it so you may prefer to look at that. It is more expensive again, though.

Good luck, anyway.
