lens dilema

A bit stuck on what to get either a sigma 100-300 f4 and a 1.4 teleconverter
or a sigma 70-200 f2.8 with a 2x teleconverter
or aybe even a nikon 80-200 f2.8 non vr
Looking to do some wildlife and have a go at birds, I know that the 100-300 has a fast focus good enough to capture birds in flight but not sure about the others.

Re: lens dilema

I had the Sigma 70-200 f/2.8, which was a cracking lens, but found I was wanting that extra focal length too. I made the mistake of buying a 2x convertor that was not compatible with the lens, so was never able to justify what it could achieve at 400mm.

General advice is there is some image quality drop off with 2x convertor, vs 1.4 , but I've seen Steve's shots with his Canon 200mm on 2x convertor & the results are still great.

I wanted to go for Nikon 80-400 VR , but was put off by slow AF. Until they release a new version with the rectified, I have plumped for the Nikon 70-300VR as a compromise. Only just got it, but looking promising so far.

Re: lens dilema

The 100-300 f/4 is a great lens and it works well with a 1.4x tc, it is pretty big and heavy though so you should probably think of using it with a monopod or beanbag (depending on your shooting style) for best results.

It will also give you slightly longer length compared to a 70-200 with 2x tc which is always good when it comes to bird photography, and tbh it should give you slightly better results due to only using a 1.4x tc as well.

Re: lens dilema

Congrats Bill I'm sure you'll be happy with it... I only sold mine on due to wanting Image Stabilisation as I prefer to hand hold when shooting, otherwise it would still be in my bag today!.

This was shot using it -
