lens problem

my trusted and favourite 20 - 40mm sigma has suddenly went on a go slow when it comes to auto focus, grinds along and finally focusses, is this fixable and if so is it worth it???

Re: lens problem

If it is your favourite lens, it must be worth doing something.

The Sigma service price (if it is the f2.8) is £93.99 Sigma but this might be cheaper at a local repairer.

I don't think this lens is available any more, so unless you can find another, your options are maybe limited to the Sigma 17-70 or 18-50, the Tamron 17-35 or the Canon 17-40L.

A repair will be cheaper and will also have a warranty - unless the parts are no longer available.

Re: lens problem

I guess the first step is to find out if it can be repaired. I know there is a Sigma service centre in Welwyn Garden City, but they might have regional centres that are closer.

If you ring them they will be able to tell you if the parts are still available (if it needs them) and then you will at least know where you stand.

I suspect that the sigma 18-50 f2.8 might be a development of the 17-40, but I have to say that I think the 17-70 range is really useful. I loved my 18-70 Nikkor when I first went back to SLR photography.

Re: lens problem

£94 is still cheaper than a replacement if thats the cost.

My 100-400L is just about to cost me £226 to repair the friction zoom, and thats just a bit of card

Re: lens problem

Fiona that isn't helped that my 5d2 has been back to Canon twice in the last few weeks.

They had to replace the rear screen and sensor. The sensor had developed a clump of hot pixels.
They sent it back with some custom function I've never heard of set, they tried to talk me through a full reset but I ended up sending it back again.

Hopefully I will get my 100-400 back later this week, they've only had it 4 weeks up to now

I sure hope your Sigma is repairable at a low cost.

Re: lens problem

Sigma's pretty good - they may have only the one location but things happen fairly rapidly. I sent my SD10 camera as I jammed the shutter release (my fault really but they fixed under the warranty for free) and they stated they might have to send it back to Japan but actually had it back to me within two weeks

I think Tokina do a 16-35, but it is not an f2.8.

Tamron might be worth checking out too.

Re: lens problem

Just get it repaired Fi, you'd be mad not to at that price, even if you then chose to sell it on as you'd get plenty more than that for it.

That 100-400mm repair cost seems inordinately expensive. I needed mine servicing because it doesn't focus down to its proper close focus, only down to about 3m. The cost I have been quoted by a proper Canon-approved service centre is £120 and that includes returning it to me by insured postage. I guess that friction ring could need a part that costs about £100 or something but seems unlikely. Guess it just shows it is definitely worth shopping around. Most approved centres on the internet will give you an estimate by email.

Cheers,
Rob
