lens to replace kit lens

Hi again, i know im a pain but im looking at getting a slightly better lens to replace the kit lens on my canon xti...ive not got the money to go wild yet ive only got about £150 and ive seen 2 lenses..just wondered if any of them were any good.

they are...

Canon EF 35-80mm F4-5.6 EF III Wide Angle Zoom Lens (i dont have a wide angle yet)

and

Canon EF 28-105mm f4-5.6 'A' Range Lens (gives me a little extra range than i have with the 18-55mm)

im guessing they will be slightly better quality than the kit lens and it'll be a start to my collection at least.

ill get better lenses after xmas, i know what ill be asking for for my birthdays if future might also sell a couple of the kids on the black market to fund my needs

thanks

Of those two, definitely go for the 28-105mm lens. It has the same lens quality, lower wide angle and longer telephoto and the same aperture range. The 35-80mm really is a cheap lens that I owned for all of a week before getting rid in favour of something better. It is pretty soft throughout its range.

That would certainly be the choice I would make. Hope you enjoy your new lens.

Cheers,
Rob

Re: lens to replace kit lens

If you want some good prices on Canon kit, try Kerso who trades on ebay, if you email him with what you want, he'll come back with a price. He's cheaper if you deal away from ebay, he brings in stuff himself from the US & posts from Scotland. Just bought the new 70-200 f4L IS USM from him for £680.00, which is a pretty good saving from the shop price.

Re: lens to replace kit lens

thanx to you both for the info, ive always been a little wary of shopping on ebay so thanx the the info on a trusted supplier, there are that many crooks on there and you read all the horror story's its nice to have someone singled out as being trustworthy!

i should try being a little patient i suppose aswell and not just buy the 1st lens i can afford and save for a quality one, i might put it into practise but patience isnt one of my strong points

thanx again

I'm not that patient either, tend to think, right, I've made up my mind and I want it now! As for Ian Kerr, his ebay feedback is over 3300 and 99.9% positive. If you google kerso as well, he comes up recommended from alot of sites. Have to say I was a bit worried about paying by bank transfer, but as soon as it cleared it was with me in 2 days, which was one day late. As soon as I emailed him he contacted me back and phoned in the afternoon, just to make sure it had arrived. Pretty good service.

Re: lens to replace kit lens

Depending on where you're located there might be a London Camera Exchange store nearby (they're not just in London, but not every city has one). Their prices for second-hand kit aren't as good as eBay, but you can still make a decent saving, and you can return it if it's not up to scratch.

Lenses don't depreciate hugely, but also they don't generally go wrong - if you're on a tight budget you can often get a superior lens for the same cash, if you're prepared not to be the first person to mount it to a camera.
