Lens upgrade - Advice and Opinions

I am looking to upgrade my portrait/close work lens. I currently have a Canon 28-70mm f2.8 L series and I can't decide which is the best way to jump. Do I go down the 24-70mm f2.8 route or the 24-105mm f4 route?
I would like to stick with the L series and while the 24-105 gives me range between 85-100mm (I believe the most flexible for portraits) I would loose an f stop over the 24-70. The next lens up in my collection is the 70-200 f2.8 L, although this is a bit large to wave around in front of people.
Your opinions and advice would be appreciated, and if I can make up my mind there may be a second hand 28-70mm f2.8 L up for grabs

Re: Lens upgrade - Advice and Opinions

I've always thought that the optimum for portraits is 85-135 in FF terms, so 50-85 using a crop factor camera is right on the money for me. the 70-200 f2.8 is also a great portrait tool if you have the space to use it.

I don't think that either of the lenses you mention are 'portrait' lenses, although the 24-105 does have a usable range for this work, only around half of its range is in the portrait area.

Many people rate the 50mm f1.8 for the depth of field control, but I think an 85mm f1.8 prime is a better option.
