Lens upgrades - the noobie is confused

Hello all,

I think it's about time to upgrade one, or maybe two of my lenses, as I'm not 100% happy with the image clarity I'm getting but I cannot decide which.

The lenses in questions are:
28-80 f3.5/5.6 II (kit lens supplied with the EOS500n 35mm SLR)
70-210 F4 (manufactured in the late 80s)

Both will be used on a EOS500D, and I think I've read so much that I've confused myself . I also do not have a massive budget for these - probably about 250, so I think only the one will be changed at the moment.

The shorter zoom is used the most, so I'm erring toward that. However it is newer than the larger zoom

I do not have a problem with 3rd party lenses (I have 2 Tamron lenses as well, the 90mm SPAF macro and a 500mm MF mirror lens) but cannot decide what to do. I take mainly everyday scenic stuff if I'm out and about, but really like wildlife stuff when I get the chance.

Cheers all, and I'm sorry if this has been done to death in the past.

Noel.

Re: Lens upgrades - the noobie is confused

I'd say that the 70-210 would be useless for wildlife as it is not long enough and will be equally useless for landscapes and general photography as it is too long!

For my money the 28-80 is a better bet, but for 250 you should be able to get a good modern lens that will do anything except wildlife. 28 is not very wide though and it is generally accepted that 18mm at the wide end is more useful.

Sigma do a 17-70 f2.8-4.5 for 228 at One-stop, the 18-135 OS for 244, 18-50 f2.8 for 265, and the unstabilised 18-200 for 202. I had this Sigma 18-200 and was very happy with it until a Nikkor came along at a price I could not resist.

Re: Lens upgrades - the noobie is confused

Thanks,
Yes, I'm erring toward replacing my 28-80 with a wider lens as well, mainly as it is going to be the one that's used the most often.

When I say wildlife, it's mainly garden wildlife and Birds. I agree that longer lenses are definitely required for more serious stuff, but that's a way off yet.

Thanks for the recommendations, I'll check them out.

Thanks again,

Noel

See my thread here where I used a 200mm lens on a crop factor body at a range of 12 feet. I still think that 200mm is not long enough without some serious cropping - and then you will loose image quality.

I've added more pictures further down the thread.

I have used the Sigma 18-200 OS lens and have also been happy with it.
