Re: Light Meter

Do you want one that does flash as well as ambient, or just flash, or just ambient?

For an ambient meter, look for a good Weston Master 5 or Euromaster on e-bay. Make sure the invercone is with it. Gossen are another good make. Minolta used to do a great spot meter, but I can't rember the model.

Re: Light Meter

I have a sekonic L-358 which does ambient and flash. The cheaper 308 does ambient only if I remember rightly. Both good meters and fairly priced , lots of second hand on fleabay mostly because people find they dont actually use a light meter as much as they thought they would

The 308 is a flash meter that also does ambient. It is limited compared to the dearer models as you have to set the shutter speed you are using on the meter before getting the reading. As I only use it for flash that is not an issue for me, but for ambient use it would ba a pain.

Re: Light Meter

Dabhand16 - I am looking for one that does ambient only, for now anyway. I'm not up to full speed with using my flash correctly - its on my list of things I want to learn more about, but a bit later down the line. (I can only do one thing at at time!)
Summerleft - I am still unsure if a meter is for me, but would like to try one. Secondhand from fleabay would seem to be the way forward. If a meter is for me then I will invest in a dual purpose one.

Thanks very much for your advise guys, its much appreciated

Re: Light Meter

I use a variety of meters. My big rule is to use incident metering only, so all my meters have domes. Here's my rundown on what I have at the moment:
  • Sekonic L308 - quick to use, nice big display (great if you want to take your glasses off). Not sure what Dabs means about setting the shutter speed before use, I just put the meter between the light source and the subject, press the button and read off the aperture/shutter combination (you can step up and down through all the possible combinations with ease).
  • Gossen Profisix - I've got two of these. Finicky to set up but take a marvellous range of accessories (I have the spot, flat and flash metering add-ons). Incredibly sensitive, will happily meter in situations where you need a torch to read the display. Big, bulky and built to last.
  • Weston Master - the Leica of meters, beautifully made and compact. Never buy one without an Invercone and stay clear of models before the V series; unless you have 20-20 vision, the scales are unreadable. Nothing like as sensitive as the other two but utterly reliable within its limitations.
If you're on a tight budget, consider the Soviet era Leningrad. It's surprisingly well made and very easy to use.

My 308s operates in shutter priority or EV modes only.

Save your money and download a copy of Fred parkers "The ultimate exposure computer".
It was compiled for film but is just as relevant to digital and it takes no time at all to learn if you just follow Freds direction!
