Re: Light Meters

Not in the least decrying the usage of light meters, I have one and use it too. But I must object to the idea that somehow you're a 'serious photographer' by using one. Metering in modern cameras is extremely sophisticated and for many people, serious as they are about their photography, that proves entirely adequate.

The iodea that being serious or professional means I should be ready to switch off all the automation and use it manually makes as much sense as saying if Lewis Hamilton wants to be a serious, professional racing driver, he should turn off all the telemetry and on-board computers and drive the car manually!

External meters are particularly useful for complex lighting situations, studio work and so forth and, as mentioned, I use one at times. I have to say though I use it less and less these days because the latest cameras really are extremely good at metering accuratel;y for difficult lighting situations.

I am serious and, I believe, professional in my approach to professional photography that forms a major part of my living, but believe me, I will use every practical and reliable aid available to me to make it easier!

Cheers,
Rob
