Macro, confused over choices

Good evening all,

I like little things, I like taking pictures of little things and I think I need a little thing lens.
The problem is, I don't know which one. I've looked at the Canon 50mm macro, which has been replaced by the looks of it with the 60mm one. However from what I understand they only go to 1:2 life size.
The Sigma 50mm variant looks good at 1:1, and is cheaper than the Canons and there is a Tamron option as well.
Any opinions out there as to which one to go for? Any preferences?
Cheers all, and I'm looking at around 250-300 pounds.

N.

Re: Macro, confused over choices

I don't do macro, but those that do tend to use the Sigma 105 or 150. The snag with the 50/60mm range is that you will have to get really close to your subject, the 105/150 allow you more space.

this link might help a little: http://www.pixalo.com/community/tuto...ial-24240.html

i would recommend a 100mm lens - they go to 1:1 magnification.

Re: Macro, confused over choices

I've used the Canon 100mm, Sigma 105mm and Sigma 150mm - continue to use the latter two!
Personally, I'd recommend the Canon 100mm for the build and either the Sigma 105mm or Tamron 90mm (about which many have given very positive feedback) for much better value - all 3 have similar image quality

Re: Macro, confused over choices

I'd recommend a 100ish mm macro lens if you haven't got one already, as it's best for range/price. The 180/150 lens are more expensive.

The 50/60mm will also be good, though you'll have to be closer to the subject to get the shot. If it's insects you're after they will not always let you get too close so the further away you can stand the better, making the 100mm better than those.

Any macro lens should be of good quality for image by the main brands. So I guess it's really down to what you're willing to spend / what you want to use it for.

Re: Macro, confused over choices

The Sigma are great macro lenses and I think you will be very happy with.
The Tamron 90mm sp f2.8 is also a lovely macro lens that you will be very very happy with.
The Canon 100mm is considered by most to be the best of the lot for Canon shooters.
The questions are: Do you want to stick with a Canon if you do - no doubt about it Canon 100. If you want to or is willing to go with 3rd party I would recommend the Sigma 105. The 150 is longer and that depends on your shooting style.
