macro or zoom
I've more or less decided now what i want on lenses for now and in future. But i've come up with another question mark. Will the macro for example the 105 nikkor vr zoom as well as the 70-300mm from nikkor.
I'm very interested in macro, and would like to do that when i can plan some time in for myself. But need zoom as well. Only rather don't want to end up having to buy a single lens for all different needs. Doesn't it get complicated when you do research in lenses Some much to choose from and everyone has got another opion with different lenses. You think you've got the right one, and then someone says it is rubbish

Re: macro or zoom
Well, judging by your gallery, (if that is anything to go by...), I would say go for the macro. Unless you want to take shots of things that are really far away (duh
), I don't think a zoom like that is worth it (said the guy who bought one). It's useful, yes, but macro is far more fun, and interesting, and the macro lens will have better IQ merely due to the fact that it is a prime lens...[Edit: Oh and don't get tricked into thinking that you can use the zoom as a macro lens. Even with the "macro" functionality on the sigma 70-300, the focussing really isn't anywhere near close enough to do macro....you have to stand so far away that it effectively cancels out the effect the zoom would otherwise have] |

Re: macro or zoom
If you have decided on what you want for the future then buy the best you can. That will probably mean buying one now and saving for the next one. So...you need to decide which is your most immediate need and only you can do that and as Jack said, don't be fooled by zoom lenses that have Macro in the name.
Lastly don't rush into it. Read, research, check prices, ask questions here and then make your mind up. It's a bit like a dog....buying a lens can be for life. |

Re: macro or zoom
zoom is where you get a range of focal lengths in one lens,. so the 70-300 'zooms' between the 2 focal lengths, the 105vr will give the same amount of telephoto / angle of view as the 70-300 when the 70-300 is set 1/3 of the way (v roughly) through it's zoom range (i.e. @ 105mm)
the 105vr is nice but not that cheap so also consider tamron 90 macro and similar (on the 70-300 the latest one with VR is really nice by all accounts) Sil edit - as JM says the 105 macro will give more magnification than the 70-300 because it will focus much closer

Re: macro or zoom
Sil and Stephen have both made very valid points also, but I wanted to draw your attention to this. I have heard nothing but good things, and I have ordered this lens recently. It hasn't arrived cos they're out of stock, but should be here in approx 2 weeks, so if you wait till then I can give you a preview. Also PM Sawdust, he has one. Like I said, I have heard nothing but good things about it, and at £199 at onestop, it is hard not to consider! (Plus the focal length isn't that different). No VR, but you shouldn't need it at that F/L

Re: macro or zoom
I'm definetely not going to do decide before i've done enough research. What i meant is that I know what I want and I then need to choose the lenses for it.
Very usefull comments thank you. Yes i'm waiting anyway before I buy a lens. So JMitchell if you get your lens, then i'm interested in the photo's. I don't mind spending a bit, as long as the lens is a good one and will do me for a long time. |

Re: macro or zoom
I've been turning my thoughts down this same road Dutchie. If I get a new lens, should it be a macro or a bigger zoom. I'm erring towards the latter and then I'm not sure!

Re: macro or zoom
You know Angela, i thought ok the zoom looks good and will do me for now. But then you read reviews about the tamron macro and you start changing your mind again
![]() So i'll think a little longer. Bird photography and little animals that is what i think would suit me well. And then portrait aswell. Macro? I will add more photo's when i've got time onto my gallery as what's in there now is not a good picture of what i can do. |
