Mini Tripod

I'm looking for a mini tripod that has a quick release plate, as I find the ones without very fiddly and a pain to use. I can only find the Velbon CX Mini that fits the bill. Does anyone have any recommendations or advice?
All suggestions welcome!

Re: Mini Tripod

It is not the tripod that has the QR plate, it is the head. Just buy a tripod that suits your needs and a seperate head with a QR plate. That way you can use the system of your choice on all of your tripods and monopods instead of being tied into a system that might limit your future options.

I decided to standardise my QR system and now use the Manfrotto RC2. I have a Manfrotto 486 ball head on my tripod and a 234 on my monopod. QR plates are permanently attached to my two main bodies and my 80-200 lens. This means that I can easily mount any camera and lens combination on my tripod or monopod - or switch between them.

Re: Mini Tripod

Thanks Graham,
I already have a Manfrotto 190XDB tripod with a 391RC2 head. I have considered getting a monopod, and will get one eventually, but its on the back burner at the moment with everything else on my list! I would have liked to have picked up a Manfrotto 'mini' tripod as i do like their quality, but they only seem to make full size items, apart from the table stands they do which are fixed at about 11 inches.

'Nuff said. Just get a small tripod and either use your 391 head, or get another RC2 head to keep on the new tripod. If you have two different QR systems the hassel

you describe here is just as bad if not worse than if you have to swap QR plates all of the time.

Re: Mini Tripod

I will get another RC2 head I think and a small tripod, oh and a monopod, oh and while I'm at it......its never ending! lol
As another little aside, how much cheaper is camera gear in Jersey than the mainland? I know its a lower rate of VAT and Im going there for a holiday in April, I wonder if it would be cheaper to buy a 5D and a 24-105 lens there, or Onestop digital?

Re: Mini Tripod

I've not been to Jersey. Is there a camera shop there?

Edit: Just looked on Google and there are 5 shown in St Helier.

Re: Mini Tripod

We bought a 7dayshop Tripod for our holiday - perfect size (and price!). You can't change the head (but I'm not fussed to use my cullmann or Benro QR plates as it's holiday use only)

Coals to Newcastle but 7dayshop is there (along with some of Amazon). Pretty sure there's no outlet as they've been taking advantage of the VAT concession (ending in April, IIRC)

Well thats just my luck! Im going to Jersey at the end of April, and now I find out the lower rate tax is ending! I just thought while I was there I could pop in a local camera shop and get what I wanted minus the 20% VAT. I was told there was a local tax of around 5%, but that would still have been a 15% saving. Ah well, looks like its Going to be Onestop Digital!
7 Day shop does have some bargains though dont they?....

Re: Mini Tripod

Actually, don't think the VAT concession makes any difference to shops - it was for mail order and continues for a lot of services including our old friend Banking (which is why there are numerous "offices" without people for all the banks! )

Yeah, 7dayshop have some great prices - I've bought quite a lot from them over the years - and good to see their prices haven't taken a massive upward hike

I picked up a pack of three 4Gb SDHD cards from 7 day shop for £13 or so on special offer a week or two ago. Its always worth keeping an eye on their offers. I end up buying all sorts that I never thought I needed, maybe Im an advertisers dream customer!
