I have been thinking for a while now about getting an ND filter mainly (i think) for moving water shots but not sure how much i will use them so did not want to go all out for a top of the rang. So my question is has anyone any experiance with these and could you make any sugestions as to a good place to start.

Re: Which ND filter

For what you want at this time the 7 Day Shop do a variable one that won't break the bank

Rob Barron has written an in-depth review there too.

Several members bought one at the time.

Light Craft Workshop 77mm ND500MC Filter

I bought one of these and it's very good, doesn't have a noticeable colour cast at all.

Re: Which ND filter

I use B+W 2 stop & a 10 stop, also Lee 150mm filters if you have the ND grad put it the full way down & it acts as a ND filter to no color casts either.

Re: Which ND filter

Like simpbow I use B&W NDs (2,4,6 stop) to slow things down, and also circ grad NDs of the same values. although I am not a fan of "smooth water". I also find the grads useful at car, steam and horse shows as the grass can burn out if it is a hot dry day and the grass is dry and yellow, (I use them "upside down")

Re: Which ND filter

I've got a variable ND filter and like it. Good enough for a 20"x28" I have on my wall

Re: Which ND filter

I've just checked out the 7 Day Shop and they have variable ND's from 19.59 for a 58mm one to 42.19 for an 86mm one. I think I paid about 34 for my 77mm one and see that now that size are down to 28.59!

While these are probably not as good quality as the other mainstream makes, they will do the job for someone starting out with ND's and maybe allow an informed choice of a better quality non-variable ones if deemed necessary.
