Need help with diffusers

Hi
I'm planning on buying a diffuser for my 430 ex but i don't know much about them apart from reading about them and seeing sample shots.
I will be using it in a sports hall a few times a year so obviously it's a very high ceiling, other than that it will be for an all rounder use.
I like the size of the Omni bounce but from what I read Gary Fong Lightsphere is the way to go.
There's also the other gary fong diffusers but i don't know their purpose and I can't really go to shop and try it that is why I'm here and hoping someone can help me choose. If I can avoid the Fong Lightsphere (don't like the size and I don't really need crazy professional results since it's only for personal use) settle for 2nd best that will be great.
Thanks in advance

Re: Need help with diffusers

Well i can only speak of the standard Nikon SB-800 diffuser, and the two styles of the Gary Fong - the Lightsphere and the Whaletail.

Now you say you will be using it in a sports hall, so I'll assume that the range will be greater than usual. By usual, I mean room sized environments with around 20 feet the maximum distance to the subject.

Any diffuser will reduce the amount of light generated by your flashgun. This might mean you having to raise the ISO to get decent lighting.

The Whaletail style diffuser can be used with a soft / power orientation, and I think if you are going to be shooting at a greater range than 'usual', it might be the best option. However, as there are two ways of fitting it to your flashgun (soft/power) and then you have two doors to modify the light, either or both of which can have reflectors fitted to them, it is more complicated that the fit and forget of the Lightsphere.

Although my example shots are not like the ones you are going to be taking, here they are for reference:

Dave has also poseted some Lightsphere shots

The genuine GF ones are expensive, but might be better made with better materials. The copies you can find on e-bay are much cheaper so you might be able to buy both and do you own tests.
