Need lens help (Canon)

Hi,

I have a Canon 400D which I purchased with a better lens than what was in the standard kits. I have a Canon 28-135mm ultrasonic zoom lens. It looks like this: http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/len...N_6082-600.jpg

What I am interested in purchasing is a lens that is a lot smaller in physical size so I can take my camera to concert events much more easily. I'm wondering what sort of lens would be appropriate for this? Am I looking for a completely different type of lens? I am definitely a beginner in understanding all the lingo etc.

Any help would be appreciated

Re: Need lens help (Canon)

This is going to depend on how far away you are going to be shooting. If you don't want a large or heavy lens I think you should consider the Canon 50mm f1.8 or the 85mm f1.8.

These threads might be of some help

Re: Need lens help (Canon)

Thank you

What is the difference between those two lenses? The 50mm looks like a very good size.

Edit. I see a 50mm f1.4 instead of a f1.8, more expensive but would that be any more beneficial?

Re: Need lens help (Canon)

Set your lens on 50mm and see what you field of view is. Then go to 85mm and see what the difference is. Then you will be able to judge what focal length would be best for you. It will depend on the distance that you usually have between you and the stage.

The lower the f number, the bigger the aperture (or the 'hole' in the lens) and the better the lens can 'see' in low light. If the gigs that you go to have good strong lighting I think that the f1.8 will be good enough for most shots that you would want. See if one of the members who shoot gigs adds any input.
