Need new lens for nikon camera, help

Hello, my name is Jared and I am a new/ amateur photographer and I have recently purchased a used d50 nikon camera. The lens that came with this camera is fairly small and I am more interested in a larger lens for bird photography and such. I don't know much about lenses and have basically been blindly searching for quite some time now. I have seen a lot of 80-300mm lenses but I'm hoping for more of a 100-400 or bigger type of thing. I looked a phoenix lenses but I have concluded that they are not a great brand of lenses. I'm only 17 so I have a budget of about 300 U.S. Dollars. If anyone can give trusted feed back it is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much.

Welcome to Pixalo Jared

You are looking in the right area. Long lenses are best for wildlife, but there are one or two inherent problems. First is the cost. It is unlikely that on your budget that you will be able to buy a lens that will have 400 - 500mm at the long end if you go for a zoom lens, or a prime of similar length. Second is that using long lenses is not easy and you will need good technique to get the best from them. Third is support. For wildlife a monopod is flexible and faster to use than a tripod unless you are setting up to shoot with a fixed angle in one site where a tripod will be effective.

In your situation it might be better to consider a used third party lens such as the Sigma 70-300 APO as they are cheaper than the similar Nikon products. I think that you can get a stabilised version that for you (being inexperienced) might be better than a non-stabilised one. On your D50 it will be effectively a 450mm lens at the long end.

You might find this thread that I posted of interest as it deals with image sizes with and without cropping

Re: Need new lens for nikon camera, help

Quick questions about your post.
I might not have said this previously but tw lenses I want I am okay with them being used before me. As long as they function properly.
Also this sigma lens, is it a trusted brand that would be good for me? My main criteria is: autofocus, zoom between 300 and 500(though I realize 500 is really pushing it and fairly unreasonable), I want it to be able to function with a nikon d50 because I'm aware that some lenses do not, and price is a real concern.

Re: Need new lens for nikon camera, help

The Sigma is a well respected brand and the APO lenses are of better quality than the non - APO ones. They should work with your D50 as it has a built-in focus motor. However, it is always best to try the lens on your camera before buying. The D40 and D60 models (and AFAIK some later Nikon models) do not have focus motors and therefore lenses with no built - in focus motors will not auto focus on these models.

Sigma make a 120-400 and a 150-500 which get good reviews, but I think even used ones will be outside of your budget.

Re: Need new lens for nikon camera, help

Thank you very much for your help, I will certainly search around for sigma lenses that I could possibly afford, even if it's slightly out of my budget. Again, thank you.
