Need Nikon Lens Advice PLEASE!!!

I have a Nikon D200 and I am purchasing a D90 in a couple days. I currently own only one lens (my 18-55mm Nikkor broke) it is a 70-400mm Tokina good lens however it has no vibration reduction ability. I am buying two lenses and would like to keep it around $1,000 one could be an "all-in-one" 18-200mm VR perhaps? and the other 18-?????mm to go with my Tokina Tele.

Welcome to Pixalo Syattica

There are various options for your general purpose lens. In the 18-200 range there are Nikkor, Sigma and Tamron all with stabilisation, but you could save some money by getting the non-stabilsed versons of the Sigma or Tamron.

Here are some example shots I took with a non-stabilised Sigma 18-200

And my review

Pixalo Photographic Equipment Reviews - 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC -

For a bit more money you have two options with a longer reach - the Sigma 18-250 or the Tamron 18-270. Both of these have stabilisation.

The Nikkor 18-70 kit lens is very good to complement your Tokina. I used my one for over a year before I bought more lenses. The Nikkor 17-55 f2.8 is excellent, but expensive.

All of these lenses can be bought used to save some money.

Re: Need Nikon Lens Advice PLEASE!!!

Heres my thoughts on your lens enquiry, I think that the 18-70mm Nikkor is the best kit lens that Nikon have ever produced I use mine all the time and for almost everything.....If I had not got this it would be a
18-200mm VR Nikkor....if you do have the cash and you are buying longer lenses then always go for the VRs or shake resistant lenses you know it makes sense.

Re: Need Nikon Lens Advice PLEASE!!!

Dabhand16 thank you for the warm welcome! I appreciate all of your input and the examples you had for me dabhand. I really think I might pick up the 18-70mm and the 18-200mm VR They will be shared with my wife and she refuses to use anything without VR or some type of image stabilization at least for the time being.

3rd vote for the 18-70mm AF-S DX - one of those rare beasts that well out performs it's price point.

As for VR - people DID manage to take sharp shots before image stabilisation became available. There's no substitute for taking the time and effort to learn good camera handling technique.
