New Kit

Hi
I need some help on upgradeing my kit. At the moment i have 2 x Nikon D200s with grips. 18-70mm 3.5-4.5 G AF-S DX Zoom Lens and 18-200 VR Zoom lens. Im selling one of the D200 and lenses and keeping a D200 as a back up. I want a D300 and new lenses. Most of my work is studio based and i need help on what lenses to get. Id like to stick to Nikon lenses. Ive got a buget 3500 to spend including D300 any help please

Re: New Kit

85 F/1.4 ... quite possibly one of the finest lenses ever made! course you'll need plenty of room. it's got poor minimum focus distance and with the crop factor it's a bit on the long side for portraits... however if u can get round those obstacles it's an awesome lens!

p.s. make sure it's the 1.4... the 1.8 is poop in comparison when it comes to the out of focus elements - to do with the 9 curved aperture blades - in fact all the nikkors with the 9 curved blades have amazing creamy bokeh.

Re: New Kit

The nikkor 17-55 F2.8 vr. Very good for portraits appearantly. But others would be better to give you an idea of how good the lens is.

It's on my wish list

Re: New Kit

For studio work the 17-55 2.8 and the 85 1.4 are very good and would be well within your budget. I'd add the new 50mm 1.4 AFS for wider stuff with excellent DOF control. I'd also get the MB D10 grip for improved portrait handling and balance. If you'll be shooting any available light stuiff then add an SB800 flashgun if you can find one still as it offers better value than the new SB900.

For portraits a Sigma 70-200 is great, but if you want better (and way more expensive) then theres always the Nikkor 80-200 F2.8 as well as a Tamron 17-50 (all three F2.8). It would also let you get rid of that 18-200 for a little bit of extra cash.

Re: New Kit

everything I read in this post I agree except that I think That the Nikkor 85 F/1.8 is a little sharper than the 85 F/1.4 if you can go to a store where you can take your camera and try them you will see.

Re: New Kit

I've had both, at one point I had them both at the same time; at the same aperture the 1.4 was for me the slightly sharper lens, this is the same in independent tests. But for portraits there are other more important factors as has been pointed out.
