New and Need Direction

I am relatively new to Photography. I recently purchased a Canon EOS 30D (Going to purchase the Mark IIID on release). I have about $11k set aside for lenses after purchasing my MarkIIID. What are top notch lenses for Landscape/ Panoramic photos and Shooting Nudes? Can anyone help me out with this?

Re: New and Need Direction

Take a look at the Canon 'L' Range of lenses. There will be something available in that range to meet each of your required needs.

Not overly familier on Canon, but maybe the 17-40?

Unless your going to be shooting sports or wildlife I would seriously reconsider this choice, for the landscape and studio work you mention I think you should be looking at the Canon 5D http://www.pixalo.com/reviews/showpr...roduct/8/cat/2 and/or (if your budget allows) the Canon 1Ds mk.II http://www.pixalo.com/reviews/showpr...oduct/10/cat/2 where the full frame sensor and higher resolution really come into their own.

With this size of budget you can have your choice of Canon's best "L" lenses...

On the wide side -

EF 16-35L f/2.8 mk.II (newly released version)
Canon EF16-35F2.8L II and Speedlite 580EX II Announced
EOS (SLR) Camera Systems - Ultra-Wide Zoom - Ultra-Wide Zoom - EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM - Canon USA Consumer Products

And some of the best primes -

EF 35mmL f/1.4
http://www.pixalo.com/reviews/showpr...duct/103/cat/6
EOS (SLR) Camera Systems - Wide-Angle - Wide Angle Lens - EF 35mm f/1.4L USM - Canon USA Consumer Products

EF 50mmL f/1.2
Canon EF 50mm f/1.2 L standard lens
EOS (SLR) Camera Systems - Standard & Medium Telephoto - Telephoto Lens - EF 50mm f / 1.2L USM - Canon USA Consumer Products

EF 85mmL f/1.2
EOS (SLR) Camera Systems - Standard & Medium Telephoto - Medium Telephoto Lens - EF 85mm f/1.2L II USM - Canon USA Consumer Products

And one of the best longer zooms -

EF 70-200L f/2.8 (IS)
http://www.pixalo.com/reviews/showpr...oduct/81/cat/5
EOS (SLR) Camera Systems - Telephoto Zoom - Telephoto Zoom Lens - EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM - Canon USA Consumer Products

Hope this helps a bit

p.s. If your going to be doing studio work you'll need to budget for lighting aswell.

Re: New and Need Direction

You might consider waiting until the Photkina camera show at the end of August. It's one of the two shows Canon announce new products at (the other being PMA, where they announced the MIII) It's widely expected there would be a replacement for either the 5D or the 1Ds MkII at that show, and either would be a far better choice for you than the journalist-focused MKIII (not that the MKIII wouldn't be an excellent studio camera)

I see the new 16-35L, 24-70L and 70-200L in your future. All are excellent.

Re: New and Need Direction

I say this with all due respect - you say you are new to photography so all the best cameras and lenses are not necessarily going to produce good shots, they can help though. It's still you who make the shot so don't forget to learn as you go along.

Having said that you will have a cracking set of kit to learn on

Re: New and Need Direction

I purchased each of the Lenses that you Recommended. I was able to get a deal by purchasing everything at once. Thank you for your recommendations. You know These lenses are Really really large. The did not look so big when I saw photos of them online but they are huge. Anyhow I have started taking photos. I purchased the Mark IID because of its full frame over the Mark III which is not a full frame. What do you think of that choice?

Many Thanks..

Kelvin.
