Smile Newb with Lens questions

Hi folks

Bit of a newb!

I have just purchased a Canon 400d and knowing what the standard lens is like after owning the 300d I would like to purchase some lenses for the camera. But, i need advice on which ones to suit my needs.

1. I intend to do a lot of indoor shots of hotel rooms for my company, so i need a wide angle lens. Can anyone suggest which would be suitable please, including 3rd party lenses.

2. I also love taking pics of my kids and would like to look into doing my own portraits of my family. So as they grow up i have some quality picures. Can anyone suggest which would be suitable please, including 3rd party lenses.

3. Macro Lenses... I would like to do some photos of jewelry for my wife. I have a light tent for lighting which is good but the standard lens is pretty pants, so I am looking at a macro lens. Can anyone suggest which would be suitable please, including 3rd party lenses.

Sorry to ask a lot from my first posts but really hope someone can help me out.

cheers
Steve

Re: Newb with Lens questions

I cannot help on wide angle lens but there have been a few posts in the last days re the Sigma 10 - 20 mm that you could read.

For macro I would look at the Canon 100 mm f2.8 USM macro. I have just got one and it is probably the sharpest lens I have owned. You can get one on Ebay for about 250 at the moment. For that you get a US import but delivered from the UK. I have read that it is also a very good portrait lens but I have never used it for that so cannot give any advice based on experiance. Anyway one to put on your list for consideration.

Welcome to Pixalo Loccom

Can't help you on the macro lens, although the 100mm mentioned always gets good comments from members. There are a couple of reviews in out reviews section here.

For a wide angle, the Sigma 10-20 is a great lens. Our reviews of it are here.

Re: Newb with Lens questions

That will depend on where you are shooting - the amount of room you have. The lens (it is written) is good for anything.

It will give the same effect as a 150mm lens in 35mm speak, so could well suit your needs. I'm sure someone who uses this lens will come along soon to give the details you need.

Re: Newb with Lens questions

100mm Macro is definitely a stunning lens. Could use for portraits I suppose but best as a macro.

I have a 17-40mm Cannon lens which gives a good all round wide/landscape/portraits results.
