Re: Newbi tripod question
Monopod is more transportable and easier to use/set up, but only assists in steadying; tripod much more affective at steadying but heavier ,more bulk and can be a pain to set up in certain conditions, get one of each...

Re: Newbi tripod question
Monopods are used mainly in situations where you are using telephoto lenses and need some mobility - for instance in sport or action photography, or wildlife.
Tripods are much more stable, but are not easily mobile due to the set up time as has already been said. Tripods are more use in landscape, low light/night or macro photography where you might be using long exposures with small apertures. it is not an either/or situation, they both have their uses in different situations. The above uses are not exclusive, and there are some situations where there could be an overlap but in general that is where their strengths lie.

Re: Newbi tripod question
You may like to look at the Velbon Ultra Luxi L. It's lightweight but surprisingly stable, and quite quick to extend because of the twist-lock legs. It's rated at only 2kg load, so not really suitable for large lenses, but it is very good if you don't like lugging a heavy tripod around.
