Nikon 135mm F2 AF-D DC

So soon after getting my 85mm F1.8 ( and loving it ) I located a 135mm F2 AF-D DC lens for $600 under retail, mint in box.. from an estate.

My wife is going to need to be wined and dined after she sees that box come in the mail so soon after seeing the 85.

I've got the all manual version of this lens. Ive owned that since 1994 and I occasionally put it on my D800. The problem is my eyes are suffering from presbyopia these days, and I can't really tell what is in focus now in a little viewfinder. When I do extreme macro work I have live view turned on and use a 27 inch HDMI panel to see what I am working on.

I suspect I'll be putting*†hat up for sale once this comes in. Amazingly they still sell for a few hundred.

What my current manual lens doesn't have is the Defocus Control. I'm quite looking forward to playing with that. So many people think these are soft focus lenses, but that's just plain wrong. that DC ring just controls rendering out OOF areas.

Re: Nikon 135mm F2 AF-D DC

I have had this lens on my wish list for quite while, Loyd. Just on the technical side it fascinates me, and as you say if you know how to use it, it can give another dimension to portraits etc..

From what I've read and seen there are two different user groups - those that cannot get on with the lens, and usually give up early, and others that persevere to understand the lens, eventually getting some excellent results. I'm curious to see how you get on and what you can achieve. Either way I hope you have plenty of fun with it.

I hear it both ways, that it's hard and that it's simple... But IMO, there's nothing a little tripod test with one of my kids won't tell me in 15 minutes

I suspect I'm going to regret buying the 85 f1.8...

technically i'm still in my return rights on that but i don't do that for buyers remorse. they shipped me what I ordered and I love the lens.. It might play well on my DX body...

Re: Nikon 135mm F2 AF-D DC

Oh the sadness..

My 135mm got here. and the box looked like it had been through hell and back.. and there was glass rattling sounds coming from it. I stopped the UPS man right then and there and said we're opening this on the spot.. sure enough it was shattered.. I filed a claim on the spot and the UPS driver took the lens and box and their people are evaluating the situation. they have stated that if it wasn't packed sufficiently they aren't going to pay out on the insurance.

even if insurance pays it only covers the amount it was insured for. which equals what I paid, which was much less than it should have cost. So to get the lens I'm going to have to save up more..

I would have packed that lens in 2 pounds of bubble wrap..

You must be so disappointed Loyd

I trust that you put a flea in the seller's ear

As long as you are not out of pocket it is a small comfort.

Re: Nikon 135mm F2 AF-D DC

What a downer !!! A big disappointment with all else you have had to deal with.

There are several demos on youtube showing drop tests etc., and you would have to drop the bare lens from quite a height to damage it. That particular lens is sturdily put together and should survive some serious abuse. Bad packaging or not, that parcel has been mistreated IMHO. Hope you get just compensation.

I'm super disappointed.. for sure. the seller isn't being forthcoming with a refund. He is saying suck it up and wait for insurance to pay..

I wonder if it was broken already (before sale) as you said that it was cheap - or am I just too Cynical?

I'm not going to jump to any conclusions. I just know I was supposed to get a lens I wanted really bad at a good price, and now the best case is I get my money back less shipping, and worst case I have a claim against someone out of my area that I have no hope of collecting unless they are honest and above board..

Not a situation I like being in.

My update on this is to say there is no update. "Shipper's insurance is investigating"

Which is probably code for "sitting in a pile of paperwork not being acted on for a couple weeks."

Re: Nikon 135mm F2 AF-D DC

would you say that the damage to the box etc upon arrival is consistant and supports the damage to the lense. In hind sight may of been an idea to either take pics upon its arrival unopened Hope you get it sorted anyway

well, the end of it looked like someone slammed it down on one of the corners and the front of the lens is smashed which was the same end as the damage to the box. I didn't take pics, unfortunately.

for insurance purposes you must list the contents over a certain amount, which this would have required. yes the seller knows -- they're saying they are waiting for the insurance claim.. and won't be issuing a refund.

I paid with Paypal.. So I have some leverage.. but they too are going to say wait for the insurance claim.. I've been to this particular rodeo before..

the only win I have is to break even here..

Re: Nikon 135mm F2 AF-D DC

I put in for a refund via paypal today.. They gave me my money back within 8 hours. The seller has no proof of delivery and has received back his broken lens. The money returned includes shipping..

I hate to do it this way but it's a substantial amount of money. I can imagine the seller if he is a crook - pocketing the insurance claim as well as my money. So I went with my only recourse..

Well done Loyd. It is the seller's problem anyway. If it was broken before sale or he did not package it properly, either way it is down to him.

Re: Nikon 135mm F2 AF-D DC

In the mean time, I've socked away the rest of the money to buy this lens from another source. Once combined with this cash that was returned. I just need to find one that scores at least a 9/10 in appearance and glass.. New in Box would also be accepted.
