Re: Nikon 200 400 2.8

I'd love to dive into Large Nikkor Primes but wow, i drive cheaper cars..

I do agree though, you only live once.. Might as well have things you like if you can swing the financial side.

That is the logic I went with when I got the D800 vs. a used D700, new D600 or D7000..

I do not regret - feel a bit of guilt from time to time but not regret. I tape over the D800 logo with black electrical tape so people don't think I am rich..

Re: Nikon 200 400 2.8

Hired the Nikkor 200-400 f4 last week, first problem, I didn't have a camera bag/ case big enough to put it in when the extender and the D800 were attached so had to carry it on the lens strap every where yep it is a bit heavy. I also hired the 1.4 extender with it. Was a problem trying to wrap my water-proof around it when it started to rain , the manual I downloaded said not to get it wet! Although the 'long' end is the same as my normal tele (80-400) it seemed a lot sharper in post production. I also found limitation of 'pulling power' when shhoting from bird hides but with the D800 could crop down quite a bit if the focus was spot on. If I could afford it I think I would go with the 200-400 AND either the 500mm but probably the 600mm and extenders. THEN, I'd feel guilty so until the 6 numbers come up ..............

Interesting. Given that you say that 400mm is not really enough, surely

in these circumstances it is better to forget the 200-400 altogether?

Re: Nikon 200 400 2.8

The 200-400 or even the 80-400 are good for closer subjects but when sitting in a hide with the subjects the other side of the scrape or estuary a 600+ would be better.
It's a shame Nikon don't have a lens similar to the new Canon 200-400 with the integral extender, but then we haven't all got a 5 figure sum to splash out on one

Re: Nikon 200 400 2.8

It's tempting to think all you need is a bigger lens but clarity of the atmosphere, mist , heat haze on a hot day come into play, not to mention camera shake. There is much to be gained in getting as close as possible to the subject, usually taking images as you get closer and closer.
There is also the problem of carrying weight with a 600mm

Re: Nikon 200 400 2.8

Yes Jake, 200-400mm at 3.5kg to 5.5kg for the 600mm. I would have to make a trolley to take it about! I do have a good tripod and gimbal head though.
I remember seeing a photographer with a custom home-made trolley for all his gear near where I am in Hertfordshire. But then you need the vehicle to take that in the boot!

Re: Nikon 200 400 2.8

Getting back to Muscle750's question, the 400 and 300 f2.8s and with a 2x extender although dropping the aperture and making sure your camera will still AF at the reduced aperture sound good, why not hire first? it could save you having to worry which would be better.
There are many rental people about, I have used Lenses for Hire and found them excellent.
