Nikon 24-70 wasted on a D80?

I'm sorely tempted to lash out and buy the Nikon 24-70mm lens, but I'm worried whether it might be a waste on money on my D80 (although one day/month/year soon I might upgrade to the D7000, or the eventual replacement to the D300s).
Any thoughts? Will a D80 do justice to this magnificent lens, or should I just stick to my 24-120?

Re: Nikon 24-70 wasted on a D80?

Short answer is yes, but have you got a need for a lens that is equivalent to (in 35mm terms) a 38-112mm lens? It is an odd range on a crop factor camera and you might be better with the 17-55 f2.8 seeing as you already have the 24-120.

Absolutely! Moreso since you plan to upgrade. Pro glass is never a waste!
