nikon AF-S DX 17-55 F2.8/advice re other to buy please

Hi, have pretty much decided on a 17-55 F2.8 nikon as my best investment for general use. I have a Nikon D80, currently with 18-135 kit lens (although that's just broken).
I want my lenses mainly for landscape/travel photography and general everyday stuff, and also have a sigma 10-20 wide angle and a sigma 70 macro.

My problem is what to get after the 17-55 as most fast lenses seem to start at 70 or so, or much lower meaning lot of overlap.

I guess above 55mm, ideally I'd like a zoom to take me up to 200 or so, or even higher, but I don't really want a 3rd zoom to cover 55-70. AAArggghh...

What would you suggest? I'm happy to spend a bit as a longterm investment, but it could be easy to get this one wrong...

TIA, Ruth

Also, can anyone comment on the compatibility of the 17-55 2.8 with a D80? A review I read in ?DP suggested no problem but I do notice the blurb says it is designed for D1/D2/D100 particularly. Should there be any problem, if so why?

TIA (again) Ruth

Hi Ruth, there would be no problems with D80. Although an excellent lens (I have one), I would point out it is pretty heavy. Happy to let you try mine out on your camera if you want, as you live local. I'll have it with me at next Studio shoot, if you are there?

Hi Dave, do you mean Ian's portrait session on 17th? If so hope to be.

I think I've pretty much decided on it despite weight and cost as it's the lens I'll use most, but probably not the 70-200 2.8 on grounds of weight and cost. I'm now thinking of the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G IF-ED VR for the longer length, in all honesty it's going to be harder to justify the weight and cost and I think this should be suitable to have in the bag. One stop digital have some very good prices - any experience?

Re 70-300 VR, if you buy from OneStop I don't reckon you would lose much if you later decided to resell on EBAY. I'm tempted to get one myself, as I don't use the telephoto range enough to justify the 70-200VR price tag ... plus I always want longer. had the 70-200 f/2.8 Sigma, but sold it due to above.

Re: nikon AF-S DX 17-55 F2.8/advice re other to buy please

Read this thread with interest, as I'm in the same boat Ruthiebabe

My new 17-55 2.8 arrived today, and am looking forward to trying it out

Know what you mean about avoiding overlap, it's a tricky one

I too considered the 70-200 2.8 but, like you, couldn't justify the cost, and also wanted a longer reach, at least 300mm. To this end, I'm considering the 70-300 VR. Even though it will overlap with the 18-200 VR which I plan on getting (as an all-purpose general zoom, for when I'm too lazy to change lenses), for the money I think it'll be worth it, just to get the extra reach to 300mm for those times when 200mm just won't do (e.g. trips to the zoo).

Between the 17-55 and 70-300 I don't think that the in-between FL is a must-have range. The two lenses cover the wide end and the telephoto end respectively, and the bit in-between is really not an essential FL range to cover, i.e. 60-65mm. Having considered this aspect myself, I thought I would share my thoughts on this with you, since you raised the question of overlap/gap.

Re: nikon AF-S DX 17-55 F2.8/advice re other to buy please

Thanks all and it's good to hear from you Charlotte - it seems to be a common problem with a few of us pondering. what to buy.

I've decided to go with the 17-55 2.8 as planned but to go for the 70-300 Nikkon VR as I can't justify the weight or the expense of the 2.8 70-200 on the basis of what I mostly want to shoot. It seems well thought of and is light enough to cart around in the bag for a pretty varied range at pretty decent quality. We'll see, I may live to regret not going the whole hog, hope not.

Will feed back once arrived/had time to practice!!
