nikon AF-S DX 17-55 F2.8/advice re other to buy please

Hi, have pretty much decided on a 17-55 F2.8 nikon as my best investment for general use. I have a Nikon D80, currently with 18-135 kit lens (although that's just broken).
I want my lenses mainly for landscape/travel photography and general everyday stuff, and also have a sigma 10-20 wide angle and a sigma 70 macro.

My problem is what to get after the 17-55 as most fast lenses seem to start at 70 or so, or much lower meaning lot of overlap.

I guess above 55mm, ideally I'd like a zoom to take me up to 200 or so, or even higher, but I don't really want a 3rd zoom to cover 55-70. AAArggghh...

What would you suggest? I'm happy to spend a bit as a longterm investment, but it could be easy to get this one wrong...

TIA, Ruth

Also, can anyone comment on the compatibility of the 17-55 2.8 with a D80? A review I read in ?DP suggested no problem but I do notice the blurb says it is designed for D1/D2/D100 particularly. Should there be any problem, if so why?

TIA (again) Ruth

Hi Ruth, there would be no problems with D80. Although an excellent lens (I have one), I would point out it is pretty heavy. Happy to let you try mine out on your camera if you want, as you live local. I'll have it with me at next Studio shoot, if you are there?

Hi Dave, do you mean Ian's portrait session on 17th? If so hope to be.

I think I've pretty much decided on it despite weight and cost as it's the lens I'll use most, but probably not the 70-200 2.8 on grounds of weight and cost. I'm now thinking of the Nikon AF-S Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6 G IF-ED VR for the longer length, in all honesty it's going to be harder to justify the weight and cost and I think this should be suitable to have in the bag. One stop digital have some very good prices - any experience?

Re 70-300 VR, if you buy from OneStop I don't reckon you would lose much if you later decided to resell on EBAY. I'm tempted to get one myself, as I don't use the telephoto range enough to justify the 70-200VR price tag ... plus I always want longer. had the 70-200 f/2.8 Sigma, but sold it due to above.
