Nikon compatibility?

Ok.. keeping in mind i'm a newbie and am just learning.. So be gentle when I ask questions.. lol!!

I have a Nikon D80.

Here's my ?... Dh dug out his old Nikon F-401... the lens on it an AF Nikkor 50mm 1:1.8 lens. Along with that lens are 2 other 'thin' lenses that must fit at the end of a big lens or something?

One is orange tinted and says, "Toshiba 52mm, A131 (85B) C.

The other is clear and says, " Skylite 52mm

They're only about 1/2 cm. in thickness...

Are these useful for my camera? Or no?

Thanks..

Re: Nikon compatibility?

I'm not a Nikonian, but I believe that all Nikon AF lenses will work fine on the D80 - someone please correct me if I'm wrong. There is an issue with the D40 which can only accept certain lenses.

The other items you have are filters which you screw on the front of the lens, if they're the right diameter.

The 85B is a correction/warming filter. There's really no need for this with digital, and the auto white balance will try to correct unless you turn it off. The Skylight is a UV filter. Some people use these just for protection, which is controversial, but they can help to reduce haze.

Re: Nikon compatibility?

Yep , it's basically same as this lens (minus the D .... don't worry too much about that ) :- http://www.pixalo.com/reviews/showpr...uct/121/cat/10 & you're going to love it on the D80!!!!! Opened up to f/1.8 it often means you can shoot indoors without a need for flash . These are taken with the said lens, on the D70 & D200 :-

& finally see how it beats a £900 / $1800 lens for image quality here :- Budget prime vs Premium Zoom vs Pro Zoom lens

Re: Nikon compatibility?

The D80 is compatible with almost everything that is Nikon F mount (with AF coupling and AF contacts)

• DX Nikkor : All functions supported

• Type G or D AF Nikkor : All functions supported

• Micro Nikkor 85 mm F2.8D : All functions supported except autofocus and some exposure modes

• Other AF Nikkor*2 : All functions supported except 3D color matrix metering, i-TTL balanced fill-fl ash for digital SLR

• Non-CPU : Can be used in exposure mode M, but exposure meter does not function; electronic range finder can be used if maximum aperture is f/5.6 or faster
*1 IX Nikkor lenses can not be used
*2 Excluding lenses for F3AF

basically you dont have to worry about whats compatible with the D80 ..
