Nikon D200+flash

Hi

Summarizing somewhat, I've been doing vol work at local museum.

I want to repay the curators kindness by producing some nice images of display items etc. It occurred to me last night I might try some remote flash for shadows for effect etc.

Can any one recommend something I might pick up inexpensively (eg e bay), do I need a stand?

I've got an old Vivitar flash gun here which I used in film days but I think tech will have more on from that.... I think FG and camera will not talk to each other...

Thoughts anyone?

(Thanks by the way for the "tethering" ideas......a bit of a WIP)

Re: Nikon D200+flash

You can get a radio trigger that will work with any camera and flashgun very cheaply. The Young Nuo RF 602 used to be about 10-15 IIRC, but might have gone up since I bought mine. The RF 603 will be around 20 for a pair.

A stand is not essential, but is very useful. You could use a tripod.

By this do you mean TTL metering? If so, you are right. You will have to buy a dedicated flash and either an expensive trigger that supports your camera system, or a proper flash cord.

Much easier, and much, MUCH cheaper to use manual settings and the cheap trigger that I described before.

OK....

I have a Yongnuo WR-159 radio trigger which I've used in the past.

Food for thought, thanks.

Manual settings are no problem.

(Yes, I did mean TTL.)

In that case you are good to go

A stand or tripod will be useful as I said. Are you going to use a diffuser and reflector(s)?

The flash is a Vivitar "Zoom Thyristor 2500".

Images of the item came up promptly when I googled (to my amazement) and others have obviously had the same thought with D40's and such like.

Hmmmm.....far from sure I've still got the spare bits... from your question I take it would be a good idea. Sorry, just never done flash to any extent (certainly not reflectors) but it's all a possibility.

Re: Nikon D200+flash

No, the Yongnuo thing triggers the flash quite independently of the camera but at the same time?

In that case I need a controller that'll "talk" to the Yongnuo trigger. Will they all do this?

Re: Nikon D200+flash

I would not put that flashgun directly on your camera without checking that the trigger voltage will not fry your camera.

Radio triggers have two components (for firing one flash that is. I have one trigger and four receivers). The trigger that sits on the camera and the receiver that will fire the flashgun.

Re: Nikon D200+flash

This set-up seems to be just remote trigger and one receiver for the camera.

Re: Nikon D200+flash

I've just checked your trigger and it is not a flash trigger but a wireless camera release.
