Nikon D400 ??

Hi

I saw this yesterday, suggesting the replacement to the D300 maybe next month ?

quote :-

Rumors of a Nikon D400 have recently began to surface. A couple of reputable sources, Thom Hogan and DPR forum user jeff-c, have alluded to a 16 megapixel CMOS sensor manufactured by Sony being placed in the D400. (via DPR) While December 1 has been speculated as the announcement date for the past week or so, no confirmation has come yet. jeff-c said that Nikon would announce a high-MP 135-size DSLR in about 45 days back around the end of October - so the first half of December looks pretty promising.

Thinking back to a little over a year ago, the announcement of a D400 makes more sense. Recall that last Fall, Nikon announced the D3 and D300 together. Both cameras were shockers and solid performers. Imagine what a D4 (or D3x) and a D400 combo would be like - with the D4 at 24+ megapixels on an FX sensor and the D400 as a 16 megapixel DX DSLR.

Additionally, the D400, when announced, would almost certainly have the ability to capture HD video like its sibling D90. In fact, I would expect the D400 video capabilities to be closer to that of the Canon 5D Mark II with audio-out capabilities and full 1080p capture.

And, while the timing is a little shorter than typically seen in Nikonís DSLR cycle, the early (i.e., 12 mos. cycle) announcement of the 15 megapixel Canon 50D may force Nikonís hand with the D400.

If the Nikon D400 isnít announced in December 2008, you can almost bank on it for PMA 2009 though.

Re: Nikon D400 ??

I would not be surprised if they did announce the D400, but I don't think it's got much benefit to photographers. For those who want APS-C (yes, some do, myself included in some situations), the D300 is plenty good enough, and will no doubt get cheaper if the D400 is released. Those who want a 5D type camera will buy a D700, and those pros who want a very high spec camera with speed and IQ will buy a D3. I think the only thing that will benefit them is a competitor to the studio-standard: the 1Ds MkIII.

No doubt people will disagree, but I don't think they can add much to the D300 except movie mode (who cares?) and more megapixels (I might start to sound like a stuck record...)

The Old saying that; Open the Window wider then More Dirt Will Fly In,applies to most electronic equipment that amplifies the signal.
More Pixels, downside =more noise, more difficuly in getting the optics to lay the image onto all those pixels, more noise reduction and complex Algorithms can mean less definition at high ISO settings. The Manufactureres will work on this for as long as the buying public responds to upgrading when there is a launch of a camera that has "More Pixels".
Upside =good for large print and projection ,good for cropping to small areas of the shot.
The APS sensor has probably about reached its development limit as regards increasing the pixel count certainly in the Compact Cameras. Although this won't stop manufacturers increasing the amount of pixels if it means more cameras are sold. The latest Canon Compacts have been stretched to iso 1600 but produce more noise at these high sensitiveties.
The processing power have improved the speed of focus and exposure so that shutter lag has almost become instant. Also power cosuption has been drastically reduced.
Full Frame has a lot of development and will price drop to APS values in a few years I am sure. There will also be no need to always have larger camera bodies to house the full frame sensors and will I am sure filter down into the small DSLR bodies such as the Nikon D90 and Canon 450D.(I ca'nt wait)

Trouble is, if it is touch screen I expect you would have to use a stylus to select the mode.Using your finger (great advantage) the icons or menu would have to be large and hence restricted to allow your finger to select just one.
The rest of the proposals look good though.

Touch screen? Trouble is you might end up working it with your nose, hence the 3 position switch on Canons to cut down risk of moving dial by leaving it on 2nd pos. Mind you sensors, as on the like of 400D, turn off display when up to eye.

Damn I am SOOO hot at arguing round in circles

Funnily enough, I tried pressing them on whether a) the D400 was going to be launched soon and b) whether it would use a DX or FX sensor and they pleaded ignorance on both counts! I then tried rewording the question by asking whether the DX sensors would be repositioned lower down in the product range as 'consumer' sensors with the FX being used in pro and prosumer models but still the veil of silence wouldn't crack!

Still, can't complain - I did get to have a play with a Hasselblad! The guy even let me take on the Sandisk CF card in the camera so I could examine the photos I'd taken at my leisure... ahhh, the stuff of dreams
