Nikon D50 - alternative to kit lens?

about to purchase the D50, but have read 'unfavourable' reviews regarding the supplied Nikkor 18 - 55mm kit lens .
Any suggestions for a reasonably priced alternative as first lens for the D50?

thanks...

Hello mate - welcome aboard. Similar criticism is made of the kit lens bundled with the Canon 300D/350D. I'm not sure that the criticisms are entirely justified, particularly when the comparisons are being made to far more expensive glass, but these lenses are obviously made to a price to make the camera and lens combination affordable for most new buyers.

I think it's fair to say though that if you are not satisfied with the lens and try to sell it, you wont find many takers, fleabay is usually flooded with them and you can't give them away.

If you can stretch to a better lens when you purchase your body, you should be in the best position to strike a deal on price at that time, and better glass will always be in demand and hold it's price better. If you can try to be a little discerning in the glass you buy from the outset, it will pay dividends in the long run - as new model bodies come out prices always plummet on the outgoing model but good lenses keep their price far better.

Some of our Nikon users will no doubt come up with their thoughts on alternative lenses for you to consider.

UNderstand where you are coming from ,as I had a Canon 300D with kit lens, but found prices prohibitive to better the glass. In the end it worked out cheaper to sell & buy a s/h D70 with the excellent 18-70mm lens.

For your case if you stick with the kit lens, the best bang for bucks 2nd lens would be the Nikkor AF 50mm 1.8. Mine just arrived this morning from onestop-digital for £69 inc delivery

you could consider the lens that usually comes with the d70 - the 18-70 3.5-5.6 DX ED. some places will charge you over £300 for it, but ive seen them on the 'bay for pretty reasonable prices (sub or around £200). its a very nice lens and a useful range.

thanks for the replies chaps!

To be honest, I was unsure of the cost of an alternative 'decent' lens. I had in mind somewhere in the region of £200 being 'doable'

some more to think about then...

You can get the D50 at most places with the 18-70 kit lens rather than the 18-55. This is a vastly superior lens, and is well worht getting. It's worth around £300, but as a kit its much cheaper than that.

Get it.
