Nikon D50/ D40.

Hi Everyone,

A quick question to all of you nikon followers, Could you please tell me of any significant differences between the 2 above models, I know that the D50 has the display on the top plate that the D40 does'nt have other than that I don't know.

I presume that it's the same 18/55 lens on both models and I'm led to believe it's not a bad lens, what about the metering on both models? and the sharpness and colour saturation, any help would be much appreciated from owners of either model.

I believe that the D50 is discontinued and the D40 is soon to follow so maybe some good deals to be had..

John

Re: Nikon D50/ D40.

Some of the differences are the D40 has a bigger LCD, fewer focus zones, no top plate LCD (but I think the rear LCD displays the stuff that was on the top LCD).

Best bet is to see if you can access the specs from either the Nikon site, or a photo site that has reviewed them.

I'd also consider the 18-70 kit lens as a better option than the 18-55.

Re: Nikon D50/ D40.

I got the 18-70, and very glad about it. May be predjudice, but I don't really see the D40 as a 'real' SLR. A bad view perhaps, but the focusing areas would be annoying...

Re: Nikon D50/ D40.

Hi Dabhand,
Thank you for that info, so you don't think that only having the 6 megapixels is a drawback? I don't think that I would be wanting prints any bigger than A4.
With 200 being the minimum iso you must only have a couple of iso settings before noise becomes a problem, how do people maintain that DSLR's are better in low light photography? Also not on the paintshop pro anymore on elements 5 now, if you remember we spoke about paintshop pro.

Re: Nikon D50/ D40.

Hi J Mitchell,

From what I have managed to find out about both models I am leaning towards the D50.
It would seem that it's a quality workhorse of a camera, must remember about that 18/70 lens.

Re: Nikon D50/ D40.

The BIG difference is that D50 has more sensors and it has an autofocus motor in it to operate non AF-S lenses. For a lens to autofocus on a D40 it must have its own motor (AF-S in Nikon speak).

D40/D40X is a fine camera otherwise but it is going to limit the lenses you can use.

The D40X (not D40) is also using the CCD from the D80.. so you have the higher megapixel count there.

I have the D50, and I am very happy with it.

There is a lot of hype around the number of megapixels needed in a camera. The Nikon D2H, which is revered among sports photographers is only 4MP. You can get modern compacts that have 8 or 10 MP, but would you consider them more desireable than a D40 or D70 or even the £2000 D2H? (OK - I know it is probably cheaper now, but I'm just making the point).

As I said before, greater resolution will allow an enlargement of a cropped image to a larger size than a smaller sensor. It will also create larger files, so you get fewer images on a card.

You need to view the camera as a whole, not just one or two aspects.

Having said all that, when and if I get another body, it will probably have more MP than my D70s, but that is because all cameras of the current crop have bigger sensors, not because I'm looking specifically to get this feature.

Re: Nikon D50/ D40.

Good luck, if you buy it, you should also get it for a decent price, due to the D40 and D40x recently arriving...
You wont go far wrong with it, it isn't one of those 'compromise cameras', and has a lot of the features needed to get to grips with dSLR photography before getting into pro-series stuff...

Re: Nikon D50/ D40.

Hi JMitchell,
Yes I am getting the D50, Have been trying to track one down locally to have a play around with but as yet no luck, I must admit that I did'nt think that the lenses would be so expensive, I wanted the 18/70 but it's £170 thats a lot of money when you are on a tight budget to pay for a lens, was going to get this lens and a D50 body.
Take care
John

Re: Nikon D50/ D40.

You might find a used 18-70 that has been traded in for another lens much cheaper than that.

Gray's of Westminster usually carry lots of nikon stock, although they are not especially cheap - their gear is pukka - or there is always e-bay.

Re: Nikon D50/ D40.

John,

In short, I find the D50 very comfortable to use, good weight and size in the hand. Has all the options I think I'll need (and lots more besides !).

Lens wise, I have the kit 18-55, a Tamron 18-200, An oldie but goldie Nikon 70-210 which works perfectly on the D50 (one of my reasons for going Nikon).

Re: Nikon D50/ D40.

Hi Jeff,

Thank you for that info, it would seem that I can't go wrong buying the D50, so many people have given it a cracking review, and some rearly good deals are now starting to emerge on the D50 kits.

Be lucky
